Coffee Is Your Friend

Coffee Does a Body Good
OK, I admit it, I love coffee and the link to the research paper below is likely nothing more than a desperate attempt to rationalize my coffee habit, but I thought I'd pass it along in case there are other habitual coffee drinkers like me out there.
The study finds that among beverages (including green tea, which seems to be the darling of many health and well-being circles), coffee far and away has the highest total antioxidant capacity (TAC).
A couple of interesting excerpts from the study:
"Among the beverages analyzed, coffee drinks were the most effective, regardless of the assay applied, with espresso having the greatest antioxidant capacity."
"The removal of caffeine from the espresso coffee led to a decrease in TAC values of ~25–30%, likely due to the antioxidant capacity of caffeine."
So drink your coffee and get your antioxidants!

Things That Make You Say Uhhhhh...
Finally, for your reading pleasure, I thought I'd pass along the link below. Those high heels really work the core, I guess.

Thanks to Nicole, Mike, and Max for the great info and food at the F.U.E.L. seminar today!! I know that I'll have some more questions, but it's great to know that you are all so helpful and encouraging.
I was wondering if there was still a scale that I could borrow for a couple of weeks? Thanks!

I, too, love coffee. I recently switched to 1/2 decaf due to the high volume I ingest, and also because that much caffeine seemed to make me jittery at times. BUT, maybe if I eat more zone-ish, I can go back to my fully loaded ways. Which leads to my question:
How the hell am I supposed to eat that much food? Ann told me I have to eat 19 blocks in a day. That's crazy! I'm gonna go broke just trying to keep up with the zone. But seriously, how do the big boys do it? It's wierd thinking of myself as a big boy, cause I'm really not, but 19 blocks is the "large male" catagory. I'm told Franklin is in the same boat. How do you do it, Franklin? Costco?

Costco is our friend! So are home made roast turkey breats, big vats of new mex red chilie with ground beef, and lots of chicken!!! I also HIGHLY recommend going to Asian markets ( I am partial to the Korean Market on 25th and Telegraph "Koreana Plaza" for lots of interesting cuts that make zone life more interesting!!!
For more umami try anchovies, pine nuts, jalapenos, thai basil, green onions, shallots and capers! Staples for tasty eats..

Jonathan,
I'm not sure how big you are, but I also have the same problem. I'm 5'10", hover between 165 and 170 lbs and maintain 10 to 11% body fat. I have really been trying to add muscle so that I can improve my strength numbers. Needless to say, it's been a challenge.
If I stick with it, here's what a typical day looks like:
Breakfast - 2 eggs, 1 oz cheese, 1 large orange, 1 16 oz class milk, nuts - approx. 5 blocks.
Lunch - 4 oz meat, 2 slices bread, nuts, 8oz milk. 5 blocks.
Dinner - 5 oz meat usually cooked in olive oil, spinach salad with dressing, fruit (melon, orange, apples, etc). 5 blocks
Snacks 1 & 2 - Berry smoothie with protein powder. 4 blocks.
This puts me at 23 blocks and I seriously cannot stomach any more food. It really becomes a job just to each this much.
So, if you figure out how to get more calories/blocks in, please let me know.
Good luck.
Jim

Aaaaahhhh!!
I just started the zone yesterday and planned out my food for today and brought my lunch. When I got into work, I found out that I have to go out to lunch with the client. This might me a rocky start!
PS Nicole, is your scale still available for borrowing? Thanks!

Ann,
I'll leave it for you manana...remember the eyeball method, plam of the hand, two fistfuls and a half a digit!

That would be great, Nicole. It will help Jonathan and I get going. How fun!! Thanks!

Interesting. I love coffee but find that drinking it regularly leaves me drained--I "crash" hard after about two hours.
A basic Google search shows that there's no clear concensus.

One thought is that genetics plays a role in how caffeine affects you:

Jonahan,
You can get ~15 to 20 blocks if you focus on high quality protein and loads of good complex carbs.
The hard part for me is getting a snack in between lunch and my dinner, to me this is the most important portion of the day. I eat my lunch just after my WOD then put a good Zone snack on deck for ~3PM I find if I skip the snack I end up short on blocks.
Look at Costco Fish (fresh salmon) and Chicken (no skin or bone). I have a few tricks for making large amounts of green stuff taste great going down (add taste by mixing steamed stuff with EVOO and seasoning in a frying pan).
Let's talk I just heard from a 215# guy on the national site who can do >30 pullups no problem! He said just do as many as you can every day. I am sure also eating in the Zone will get you there fast.
Cheers,
Franklin O

Tim,
It's dosage dependent. There's a steep decline after ~2 cups of coffee (rough estimate based on the lit I've read).
