Play Sports!

Just a quick reminder of the importance of sport as a part of fitness or athletic development.
Not only is sport's primacy illustrated in the image above, but it's also one of the central tenets of "World-Class Fitness in 100 Words":
* Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.
* Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast.
* Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense.
* Regularly learn and play new sports. [Emphasis mine]
(Note: The image above, as well as "World-Class Fitness in 100 Words," comes to us courtesy of CrossFit.com.)
It's interesting to note that the main benefit of sport (from a training perspective, at least; there are numerous benefits to playing sports that fall well outside the sphere of training), particularly a sport that doesn't have a set pattern or a set order of events (i.e., there's an element of unpredictability inherent in the sport itself), is the neurological adaptations that it fosters (agility, accuracy, balance, and coordination).
Today's WOD:
Run 800m
50 Good Mornings
50 Sit-Ups
Post to Comments your thoughts on sport, how it applies to training, and whether or not we should put together a CFO softball team (sorry, I'm just interjecting my own desire to play a team sport with y'all that would be fun).
Also post to Comments your time for today's WOD.

Sport rocks. The physicality, the social aspect and the competition are all good. Crossfit softball would be awesome. Who could handle us? Sign me up!
softball would be great.. although i can not promise any skill coming from this girl...
I did yesterday's workout in 21:55, with supermans for back extensions and 20 of each 50 situps as GHD situps on the dip bars near Lake Merritt (they're too far apart for dips, but they're good for something).
Today I did Lynne with 155# bench press (I haven't benched for a while). I got:
6/15
5/13
5/11
4/10
3/8
My elbow feels pretty good today, though the range of motion isn't any better.
I'm up for softball, though I don't know if I've ever played.
Lynne with 2x60# dumbbells to avoid getting killed while going for max reps (BW 178):
5/7-5/7-5/6-4/5-3/4
4/20 WOD
"Lynne"
max reps
165# BP/Pullups
4/21, 3/17, 3/13, 2/12, 2/11
I did this the last time in December with 155# and had double the reps. Could it be that my "bench" muscles haven't improved? My pullups increased 10 reps over last time. Must be that kip...
I'd love to play softball. I used to play baseketball and quit b/c I kept getting hurt. Since I'm doing CF now, I bet I'd stay healthier longer and play better.
I'm down with the softball idea...
I'm down for softball, and I can pitch!
I play monday nights in berkeley but would love to play another night with you all...I've been playing softball for years and played baseball in high school.
Allen
I skipped this workout...too busy picking carpet and designing a logo for my new chiropractic office.
I have had a new glove for such a long time it is ridiculous, and the idea to join a softball team for just a bit less. If I can work it out with the fam, I'm in!
