He asked Mike if he was a betting man. Mike hesitated, and then replied, "yeah, what do you have in mind?"

And the deal was stuck. Michael Gardner, a relatively new member of CFO is going to get his first muscle-up by May 30, 2008 (his birthday). If he does, we give him a free month of membership, if he doesn't, well... he owes us! So in honor of a man who has so boldly made his goals public, respond in kind with a few drop-dead-dates of your own to comments.

Mr. Gardner - I like your style!

I have no doubt you'll be receiving the month of June gratis! I'm pulling for you.

Mike and Nicole -

My drop dead goal - 300# DL by May 28, 2008 (which is our anniversay date).

Great call by the membership. Let's show these trainers what's up.

30" vertical by April 12th.

That video of Aguilar was one of the sickest things I've seen. What a monster.

That was a cool video.

Nice bet, what's the penalty if he doesn't get it? I think he should have to pay double dues for the month!

drop dead goal for me is 240 lbs by 2008...the closer I get to 200, the closer I get to reaching all of the other fitness goals :)

Nice dismount!

(In response to those of you being wowed by this guy's routine...)

That's a cute video and all with some would-be artsy choreography, but understand that almost all of those moves are B moves (gymnastics judges moves on a scale from A to Super E, A being the easiest, Super E being the hardest).

The muscle-up is actually rated as a basic move, not even rising to the A level:

If you want a true education on rings, google video footage of Jordan Jovtchev. This guy is a true master, having just qualified for his 5th Olympics on the rings in 2008.

Here's his typical routine. Note that he has a sequence (inverted cross to maltese) named after him because no one else in the world can do it. His only problem is that he makes everything look so easy that the casual observer can't tell how frickin' hard the moves he does are!

I've included the difficulty rating in parentheses. I've also linked to a youtube video of his routine and given the second mark in the video where the sequence begins.

homna to L-cross (D): begins at 25-sec mark
L-cross press to inverted cross (Super E): begins at 31-sec mark
inverted cross dip to maltese (E, this is the sequence now known as "the jovtchev"): begins at 36-sec mark
iron cross (B): begins at 42-sec mark
cross press to maltese (E): begins at 44-sec mark

Mike:

I think the amazing part of that video is that it features the world's greatest muscle-up.

My drop-dead goals:

15 Bodyweight OHSQ & 10 consecutive kipping Muscle-ups by March 21, 08

Having seen Michael's efforts and improvements, I don't think I would have taken that bet...

Mike, in all of your education of the working class athletes, you missed the point. For those of us working towards a muscle-up, or full ring dip, for that matter, the A moves can be exhilarating to watch when executed with such grace of movement :)

Jovtchev is amazing. That kind of strength is grace is truly elite. Thanks for the link, Miguel.

Can't wait to see that muscle-up, Michael!

waddup... back in the bay area so Ill be seeing you all shortly. Goals by next birthday May 14th

40+ consecutive kipping pullups
25 strict pullups
15 consecutive muscle ups
Shoulder press 200
Squat 425x1
Deadlift 505x1
2 mile run back to under 12 minutes (dont know if I see this one happening)

You're right, Nicole. Perhaps we can celebrate walking with beautiful form next. And what about brushing your teeth with perfect form?--that would be great!
