2008 NorCal Open

I wanted to give a quick shout out to the local weightlifting scene and give some publicity to the upcoming NorCal Open being held at FIT Barbell Club in Los Altos.
This one-day competition takes place on Sunday, May 25 and gets started at 10am. For the full schedule, please check out the website.
For any of you aspiring weightlifters out there, the registration deadline is May 18.
And while we're on the topic of Olympic weightlifting, post to comments which of the Olympic lifts is more useful and why. So which is it, snatch or clean-and-jerk?

Both demand the complete athletic package.
I'd say the clean & jerk is a more functional movement in the sense that if I was trying to get anything heavy in life(other than a barbell) overhead, I'd c&j it rather than snatch it.
However, if I had to pick only one movement to train with, I'd pick the snatch. Here's why:
1. Greater demand for midline stabilization
2. You ever met anyone who can snatch but can't
c&j(didn't think so). There are many who can c&j heavy, but fear the snatch.
3. The name
By the way, my mom competed at last years Norcal Open. Great Event. All ability levels were welcome.
Yes I said my mom...here she is at another comp:

Austin,
Your mom rocks. Looking forward to seeing you again in a couple of weeks at the Affiliate Throwdown!
I will refrain from making the obvious joke about Austin's mom's snatch.
I used to fear the snatch, probably because the first time I did one at CFO, I hurt my back. But I think I've got it now, and I enjoy the movement a lot more than the C&J. It's much more satisfying when done right.
I don't think Angela even needs to respond to this post. We know what her favorite is.
While I like snatching more, I'd say C&J is more useful cuz you're getting more weight up.
If any of my elder relatives performed more work than what it takes to pull that lever to recline a lazyboy, there would be a really bad case of rhabdo as a consequence.
Since I cannot jerk or snatch without searing pain running through my shoulders as soon at I get the weight overhead, I vote for the clean. No, LB, the reason I cannot jerk has nothing to do with my Catholic upbringing. Anyone have any acromion processes they could lend me?
What's the reason for that?
Daniel and Candance, number one male and female from yesterday's WOD. Good thing they'll both be competing for CFO on May 24th during the Regional Throwdown, and would never think about leaving town, abandoning their fellow CFO'ers on the saturday of the Throwdown.
Everyone - Please post to comments, your thoughts on this travesty, possible solutions, and words of encourgement (as long as they are in favor of Daniel and Candance rescheduling their flight)
Nabil's arguments are compelling. What's more, he delivers those arguments with eloquence and wit. Without Daniel and Candace available for the throwdown, I might have to compete. This would, of course, ensure defeat and it is completely unacceptable. What's more, several cute and fuzzy puppies and kittens would probably have their feelings hurt if CFO did not dominate the other Bay Area CrossFits. Who will compete against the mighty Jolie Gentry? Freddy Camacho? Kelly Starret? Adrian Bozeman?
I agree that Daniel and Candace are essential parts of the team. If they can't toss several hundred dollars in the toilet just to be here that weekend, one really needs to question their priorities.
People have confidence in yourselves!! I agree having both Daniel & Candace would be icing on the cake but I'm not ready to throw in the towel or start crying about it. CFO runs deep, it WILL be ok.
While I cannot claim to have seen it, I heard that the good guy prevails at the end of The Lion King.
Tamara -
That last remark is why you rock!
ps - I never could hit that driver. Ping G10 on order.
TomC, all,
The lifting suit requirements come from the USAW. The main reason is that the judges need to be able to see the elbows to judge lockout. Also, you are not allowed to use mechanical aids or other supports that might be hidden by loose clothes.
the reason we need this for our meet (a "local" meet) is because we have people qualifying for national events. There will be many qualifying for the School Age (under 17) Nationals since May 25 is about the last day to qualify.
In addition, totals at this event count for the American Open, Junior Nationals and Senior Nationals. The American Open is the only one left to be held this year since all of the regularly scheduled USAW meets were rescheduled this year due to the schedule of the olympic Trials and Games... Trials--May 17 and Games in August. Look for coverage on NBC.
