Back Health: A seminar with Kelly Starett of CrossFit SF on Wednesday!
Kelly doing "Grace"
We are hosting a much needed seminar on Back Health with Kelly Starrett of San Fransisco CrossFit on June 11th from 5p.m. to 7p.m.. The seminar will be FREE TO ALL and will cover the following:
Anatomy for Jocks
Trunk Tension and Strength: What is it and how to train for it.
Recurring Back Problems: Possible culprits and cures
Going Heavy: Technique Tips
Kelly received his Doctorate in physical therapy from Samuel Merritt College in Oakland, CA. Kelly also is the founder (2005), current head coach and a Level III senior coach at San Francisco Crossfit. Kelly’s coaching background and physical therapy training make him uniquely capable of coaching both athletes and non-athletes who are injured or recovering from injury. Kelly's own background as an athlete and coach includes paddling whitewater slalom canoe on the U.S. Canoe and Kayak Team and paddling as a member of the U.S. Whitewater Rafting Team, where he won two national titles and competed in two world championships. Kelly is the founder and director of Liquid Camp, a weeklong whitewater kayaking camp for teens living with HIV/AIDS. In his free time, Kelly enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, surfing, paddling, and training.
Kelly works at the Stone Clinic-an excellent place for sports rehab--***highly recommended***http://www.stoneclinic.com/
We hope all of your can make the seminar. We will have one mega-7pm class to make up for the 5p.m. and 6p.m. classes!
Post your R.S.V.P to comments.

Kelly Starrett? I'm in for sure.

I'll be out of town, but sure don't want to miss this! Would be great if someone could tape it!

Yes, thanks.

I'll plan to be there also. I'm sure we can all learn a lot from Kelly, I've heard nothing but good things about him.

Count me in!

Mike and Nicole - This is a prefect example of what makes you and CFO so special. You saw that your community needed help with back care and immediately answered the call. I only wish other business owners were half as caring and attentive.
Sign me up for the seminar. I could definitely us a little prophylactic back care.

I think if we just renovate the the upstairs of CFO to match the University of Oregon's treatment facility, nobody's back will ever hurt again.

Jonathan can you email me when you get a chance.

That U of O facility was published in multiple architecture magazines. It's pretty ridiculous.

Jonathan can you email me when you get a chance.

Yeah, just like Patrick said, there's a good video (even though I hate seeing myself on camera) of Freddy interviewing me on camera about the games.
Posted by: Mike Minium at May 20, 2008 8:36 AM
15:09, Patrick? That's inhuman. 3 min per exercise? Damn.
Posted by: Brad Greenlee at May 20, 2008 9:50 AM
Perfect timing on the back seminar, as I'm nursing an injury myself. I think I'm going to rest one more week before coming back in, and will try to be there for the seminar. Thanks Mike and Nicole!

Sierra - Hey there, Miss "Every warm -up should also have burpees." Looks like Coach designed a workout just for you. ;-)
Posted by: Bill at May 20, 2008 10:34 AM
Brad Gilliatt - Oh rats, I forgot to email you, and cannot immediately find your address anyway. But here's the PT reference we were talking about:
Sports and Orthopedic Leaders (SOL)
510-547-1630
www.solpt.com
My friend (and co-owner of SOL) is Nina Patterson. She is a great PT, and a damn good bike racer as well. I haven't yet talked her into coming to CFO, but I'm working on her.
Sorry for the delay.
Posted by: Sherrill at May 20, 2008 10:49 AM
Bill - I know, right? There was definitely a love/hate thing going on between me and the WOD this morning!
Posted by: sierra at May 20, 2008 12:59 PM
Brad/Sherrill
I've been to SOL before for my neck, and I have to say that place is hit or miss depending on who you get. I'd make sure you get the person referred, because the therapist I got didn't really do anything for me, even though SOL came highly recommended. The person who recommended it said the same thing, and I guess I was unlucky and didn't ask to change therapists.

That said, does anyone else get frustrated when at a doctor's or any other health professional's office and they don't have any idea what proper strength/conditioning is all about? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Even my chiropractor, who I think is the shit, doesn't really have any idea about what we do at CF. It's frustrating.
Posted by: Jonathan at May 20, 2008 1:31 PM
As long as we're talking about back and neck injuries I can't resist a shameless self-promotional plug, although I try to keep that kind of think to a minimum. Many of you know me already.
I am a chiropractor, and I would be happy to help anyone who is having back or neck problems or other neuro-muskulo-skeletal issues. I have been doing crossfit for over 2 years and have worked with a number of crossfitters, and other athletes, usually with good results. I have been an athlete my entire life and love working with/helping other athletes. Feel free to email, call, or just ask questions when you see me in the gym.
My office info is:
Allen Currano, D.C.

Allen, if it didn't take me 1/2 an hour on the parking lot that is I80 to get to your office I'd probably go see you.
Posted by: Jonathan at May 20, 2008 1:51 PM
Is it just me, or does it seem like "SOL" is an unfortunate acronym to choose for a doctor's office?
Posted by: TomC at May 20, 2008 2:14 PM
K-Star (Kelly) works at the Stone Clinic in the city--check out the main post for the link!
Posted by: Nicole Okumu at May 20, 2008 2:14 PM
So it seems we're all wasting our time with Crossfit. Check this out.
Posted by: Jonathan at May 20, 2008 3:10 PM
Tom- I was going to comment on that too...SOL would not have been my first choice when naming my office.
BTW, I have a friend who has been to Kelly Starr for knee rehab after surgery (ACL repair) and says he's great. She went back to him recently after she tore her OTHER ACL and had to rehab that one too.

Jonathan,
Thanks, I know the traffic can be a pain in the butt during rush hours. That's why I usually come to the 7pm classes at CFO, it's a lot lighter then.
Without traffic it is only 15 minutes from CFO, but we are also right near the Del Norte Bart, and there is a bus stop right in front of the office for those who use public transit.
OK, enough self-promotion...Amy and I are thinking of signing up for the CF games...where are people staying, are carpools being arranged, etc? What is the lowdown? Freddie's getting the RV, but he's going to be awful jealous when the CFO contingent shows up in this: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/rvs/684444826.html
(Mike, you can spring for it, right?)
Posted by: Allen at May 20, 2008 3:36 PM
What's Kelly do the other half of the week?
Slacker.

We're getting a CFO RV and planning the encampment around it! Link above...

I will be there (back clinic) as long as I have kid-care! Sounds like time well-spent.
Get better Alec!
BTW - I just found out that Patrick has had a nasty cold whilst putting up all of those incredible scores... a connection? Perhaps we should all kiss Patrick in order to get his cold and his amazing performances ;)
Posted by: Robyn at May 20, 2008 7:50 PM
Robyn - Let's make it happen...I'll set up a kissing booth on saturday for after the Throwdown, proceeds going to the keg which will be there....
If Jolie was on the fence about coming....now she's got a reason huh Mikey!!!
Posted by: P. at May 20, 2008 8:00 PM
anything for a good cause!!
Posted by: Robyn at May 20, 2008 8:11 PM
Allen & Amy - good job on the sign up...its gonna be rad!!!
I want a running count of who's ACTUALLY signed up so far. People Do It.
As far as i know its myself, mini, Laura, but who else has paid up?
Posted by: p. at May 20, 2008 8:18 PM
So camping out at the games is OK? I'm all for camping if there are bathrooms available...they didn't say anything about it on the website though.
Posted by: Allen at May 21, 2008 12:28 AM
I'll be at the back clinic.
Posted by: Bonnie at May 21, 2008 8:04 AM
I'm in for the back workshop.
Posted by: Bonnie at May 21, 2008 8:15 AM
> but who else has paid up?
I have placed my $75 on the CrossFit altar and offered it as a sacrifice to the gods.
Posted by: TomC at May 21, 2008 9:38 AM
de ja vu = very creepy. I cannot make it because I will be involved in my other obsession. The Yankees are in town, and not even my own prolonged health wins out against going to the park to watch my team. Someone take notes for me ok?
Posted by: wyatt at June 8, 2008 8:39 PM
Weird. Deja vu is right.
So I spent far too long playing with Lau's/Nabil's shirt idea. Here's my take on it. I spent all my time on the front and then got lazy and just threw the same crap on the back.
BTW, I think whatever design we come up with, we should do a version that's not Games-specific so those of us who can't make it have something to buy.
Posted by: Brad Greenlee at June 8, 2008 11:02 PM
I love that design, Brad!!
Posted by: Melissa at June 9, 2008 10:15 AM
As for the back of the shirt, I agree that we should keep it simple so that it's appropriate for everyone. Maybe just "CrossFit Oakland"?? I like the font that Brad used.
