« Throwdown for Two | Main | Back Health: A seminar with Kelly Starett of CrossFit SF on Wednesday! »

Now's the Time!

I just got back from the CrossFit Level 1 certification seminar that happened this weekend at CrossFit One World in Union City. And I heard it on very high authority that the powers that be will be capping the registration for the CrossFit Games very soon.
So if you're thinking about doing the games (and I'm encouraging everyone I can from CFO to do it!), now is the time. Go to the site and register. I would love it if we made a strong showing in participation numbers at this year's games.
I was also interviewed by Freddy C on a video that will be airing on the national CrossFit site very soon, I suspect. Not only did he ask me about what we've been doing to prepare for the games (our March Throwdown, the Affiliate Throwdown happening next Saturday, etc.), but I had a chance to talk about how we'd fare at the games. I didn't want to put too much pressure on anyone, but I did say that I thought we had at least one dark-horse male and one dark-horse female from our ranks that I expect to do very well (we have many, in fact, but I didn't wanna name names and put pressure on anyone).
On the other hand, I had an opportunity to meet a couple of guys from other Affiliates who will be here next weekend for our Affiliate Throwdown. One of them, an absolute beast, possesses a 2:03 Grace and a 7:35 Helen. That's quite a potent combination! And both of these were done last week within two days of one another.
OK, I'm rambling at this point, still on a post-seminar high, but the main points I want to make are as follows:
1. Participate in the CF Games. It's going to be so much fun!
2. Register now!
Post to comments your feelings about the games and what you'd like to get out of the experience.

Registered. Shit, now I'm nervous...
Get on it people...it literally takes 3 minutes

I'm interested in participating on the run. I only planned on going and cheering others on, but after watching the running video I think I want to sign up.
Posted by: sierra at May 19, 2008 5:31 AM
I meant in, not on, the run :). I'll sign up in a few weeks.
Posted by: sierra at May 19, 2008 5:38 AM
Good for you, Sierra!
I'm glad to hear that.
People, don't get hung up on how you might stack up against others.
Last year there were participants who didn't do the workouts as prescribed, had to walk on the run, etc. It's about the experience.
Posted by: Mike Minium at May 19, 2008 7:44 AM
This gives me a hard on.
Posted by: daniel at May 19, 2008 7:51 AM
I didn't know you had a thing for Freddy like that, Daniel.
FYI everybody...I just registered.
Make sure you say you're part of CrossFit Oakland when they ask you about the Affiliate you're representing.

brad gr and joe, thanks for sticking around...
lance - great work this morning.
Posted by: edgar at May 19, 2008 8:03 AM
Daniel,
I think at this point it goes without saying that you walk around with a perma-woody. We probably don't need to be updated everytime the wind blows you this way or that.
Posted by: Nicole Okumu at May 19, 2008 8:54 AM
Sigh... It's not like I would have anything better to do that weekend. I signed up last night for the greater glory of the cult.
Posted by: TomC at May 19, 2008 9:01 AM
I am so fuckin' amped up for this shit. I guarantee that CFO will absolutley dominate the Games and bring home the Affiliate Cup.
Mike and Nicole, please make sure that you let all the other CF affiliates know that CFO is assured of being victorious. They are of course welcome to witness CFO imbibing in the spoils of our July 5-6 conquest.
Posted by: Brandon B. at May 19, 2008 9:43 AM
Mike, even I'm welcomed to register? Are you sure?
Posted by: brad gilliatt at May 19, 2008 9:49 AM
The more the better, Brad.
Nice, B, way to blow our cover.
Posted by: Mike Minium at May 19, 2008 9:56 AM
Good God, what an awesome workout this morning! Edgar - thanks for encouraging me to do HSPUs as rx'd. Next time I'll do all of them that way.
Lance - thanks for showing some skin. Next time do the whole WOD that way.

I am interested in the games, although i don't know much about them, well i don't know anything about them, and furthermore i don't know if i would hurt cfo more than i would help??
Posted by: Journey at May 19, 2008 10:26 AM
sierra, aren't you supposed to be at work? you are all over this blog!! see you tonight.
Posted by: Journey at May 19, 2008 10:28 AM
ok people (journey, brad, sierra)... stop being rediculous. I see it like this, the more people we have coming to the games the better for many reasons.
A. who wants to show up and just have a handful of competitors when some of the other affiliates are bringing 20+ people, OPT's gym to name one specifically and they're coming from Canada.
B. I figure the reason we have such a legit shot at this is that we have so many people that are good at so many different things that TOGETHER as a team, we're bound to kick ass. So what if you dont have the best snatch (like angela), maybe you're still a rediculously good runner. Maybe you got a muscle-up last week but can back squat 400+ lbs. The point is that its a team event as well as an individual thing, and we're going to need the talents of everyone at CFO to bring home a title. This includes those that scream "come-on fatboy" at the tops of their lungs...who knows, maybe we'll get most inspirational?
C. Most importantly, can anyone say CFO in an RV for a weekend? It's gonna get interesting folks...
That being said, EVERYONE better be participating in next weekends affiliate throwdown. Its on home turf so we're kind of expected to win, and needless to say it will be a great team/community building event.
As far as Im concerned, you are NOT my friend if you dont do both these events.
I even used CAPITALS so you know Im dead serious.

Journey - back off, woman, this is my "smoke break."
Posted by: sierra at May 19, 2008 11:12 AM
Edgar(Mr.As Perscribed)Gold Standard- right back at ya. Thanks
Posted by: lance at May 19, 2008 11:12 AM
I went to the CF Games last year to cheer on Brandon and Connor. I was right in the middle of Ironman training so I was in no shape to compete. Even last year, as small as it was, it was a pretty cool event...this year is gonna be just ridiculous. There really are people of ALL abilities who compete. I'm even considering completely abandoning all triathlon training and competing in the CF Games this year. Also for anyone who is planning on doing the games but is just being lazy about registering, you should do it ASAP. I've kicked myself in the ass several times for waiting too long to register for a race (that I fully intend on doing) then it reaches capacity, closes without prior notice (as they all do) and my training has gone to waste, simply b/c I procrastinated!
So go ahead a register for the games in July, but as Patrick has already mentioned a couple of times, let's first focus on the Affliate Throwdown this weekend! Seriously home turf, we gotta represent! Mike, maybe you could shed some light on the importance of tapering for those who will be competing this Saturday, especially those who have been hitting it hard and consistent for the past several weeks. I already had an intervention with Brandon, during which this music started to play from the heavens.

P-Hole is right.
It's four workouts over two days with your best friends from CFO.
And the top two male and female scores from each team for each event is how the team scoring works (at least for now, as it's been explained to me). So there's no way anyone can hurt a team's chance. So we could literally have someone different placing in the top two for each workout.
So just do it!
Posted by: Mike Minium at May 19, 2008 11:20 AM
lance, lucky for you my back is still fucked, so you don't need to worry about me kicking your butt in the WOD. just don't count on this lasting for too long (ha ha). you know that i still think you are a rock star!
Posted by: Journey at May 19, 2008 11:25 AM
Alright P - I'm not going to register, but if we're in town, I'll swing by to cheer everyone on.
Now, regarding the blog entry from yesterday, I think Mike asked us to call someone out. (If you remember, I was feeling my feminist side yesterday)
So, TAMARA, I WANT YOU!
That is unless you are still sore from your beat down from the midget.
Golf - I will beat you, match play, we'll even play from the tips. No more screwing around.
Shoulder Press - crush coming
Benchpress - max reps at 160# - me not so sure
Handstand Hold - victory for BBG
1 mile run - can you run a mile?
The bet - your choice. I have a couple of ideas if you can't think of anything.
We can do the five events in any sequence or timeframe you'd like.
I wish you well. May the best person win.
Posted by: brad gilliatt at May 19, 2008 11:33 AM
Okay, for all of you wondering why as a man I'm challenging a woman, it's really quite simple. I want to beat a CFO Champion and I'm pretty sure Daniel, Nabil, Patrick, Brandon et al are out of my league. Actually, I'm certain of it.
The events were chosen for a reason.
1. I like to play G with T. I'd have to play super well to beat her. But I will.
2. T's shoulder press is her achillies
3. Bench press - errrrr
4. Handstand hold - b/c I like doing
5. 50/50 - this will be 7.5 minutes of torture with a little bit of strategery.
I WANT TO SEE MORE CALL-OUTS!!!
Posted by: brad gilliatt at May 19, 2008 11:45 AM
Actually, T is probably out of my league as well.
Okay, no more blogging for me, back to work I go! Busy bee.....
Posted by: brad gilliatt at May 19, 2008 11:57 AM
lance... because it took me 2 hours your power output was probably much higher than mine - and tho you look mahvelous shirtless, please keep your shirt on, it was disconcerting trying to do pull-ups next to sierra and chris as they were slobbering all over the bar, not to mention hard for me to keep all that weight between my legs...
Posted by: edgar at May 19, 2008 12:06 PM
6am Boys and Girls: You all rocked this morning! Very inspirational. I should have stayed, I should have stayed - damn kids...
Gentlemen: When the temp is over 55 degrees it is only right that you go shirtless in order to inspire us gals onto PR's and crushing times. Thank you to Lance, Brad and Joe for fulfilling your obligation this morning. Edgar - get with the program!
Throwdowns are cool... let me think...
Posted by: Robyn at May 19, 2008 12:51 PM
hey Phole. I was talking to Jolie and Freddy after the cert, and I noticed that Jolie has the same phone as you do. There's one more thing for your fantasy.
Posted by: Jonathan at May 19, 2008 1:02 PM
This comment area supplies a continued source of amusement. To celebrate the mighty assemblage of an intimidating CFO team that I'm sure will ride to glorious victory over our unworthy opponents, I propose a toast. I suggest we all do multiple shots of fish oil followed by whole milk chasers.
Posted by: TomC at May 19, 2008 1:17 PM
Hey Patrick--great post. Best one ever. You even convinced me to sign up, just right now... I am in the profession of convincing people to do things they don't want to do and I must say that I am very impressed...
....so everyone better get on it. Cause if the girl who has to do pull ups with a band is going, you have no excuses. And yes...I am bringing the band. And no-the band did not have to register separately.
Posted by: LB at May 19, 2008 1:23 PM
okay, I just registered for the games. I plan on selling niman hotdogs w/ lots of ketchup and fluffy buns to all non-cfoers as an act of sabotage. Oh wait, we dont need that, we have Edgar and all the rest of the cfo rock stars. Robyn we can bring our kids, so you better be there.
Posted by: lance at May 19, 2008 1:26 PM
Brad,
You have been getting high off your own supply.
Posted by: Lau at May 19, 2008 1:39 PM
I'M CALLING OUT DANIEL!!
Since he's stronger and better than me at everything except running the workout needs to have some running in it to level the playing field somewhat... other than that I'm down for whatever.. maybe Mike could come up with a good challenge workout for us.
Oh, my only other advantage is that I'm a heterosexual male who would never go and watch the Lion King on Broadway when there is an affiliate throwdown taking place. Sorry if that comment was offensive, I know there may be some people who are from New York.
Posted by: Nabil at May 19, 2008 2:40 PM
Nabil,
I'm game for a challenge. Let Mike decide what it should be. My only disadvantage is that I can't do anything that involves being on my back for a few days since my back is sunburned to shit right now. I guess that is what I get when I go to the pool with my friends that don't require sunscreen.
Posted by: daniel at May 19, 2008 3:09 PM
Nabil - nice, I like it.
Just don't do anything with muscle ups, hspus, or lifting anything heavy....
and you'll win!
Posted by: brad gilliatt at May 19, 2008 8:42 PM
edgar, lance, brad, joe, robyn, aminta, and all you other 6 AM folks,
sorry i missed this one. what happened? no idea what that would be like. i'm in tehachapi again, watching the world go round and round. see you thursday, or maybe not until friday.
Posted by: Joe P at May 19, 2008 9:02 PM
Sorry Brad I only answer challenges from "elite athletes". With that being said if you want to keep taking free lessons from me on the golf course then I will continue to "school" you. Don't get it twisted, Audge's win was a fluke.
Daniel I didn't know there are people out there who don't require sunscreen unless we are continuing to perpetuate the myth that people of color don't need it.
Posted by: Tamara at May 19, 2008 9:10 PM
Relax Tamara...It was just a little inside joke. I'm not trying to perpetuate any myths or offend anybody.
Posted by: daniel at May 20, 2008 7:48 AM
Tamara...touche good woman....touche...
Alright, here's the golf course bet, we'll play front/back/total 5-5-5, so bring cash. After I whoop you, you will accept my challenge to a shoulder press max lift.
And, after I whoop up on you for that, you will publish in this blog that your SP is less than that of a soft, 40something, level 1.5 athlete.
Say when.
Posted by: brad gilliatt at May 20, 2008 12:12 PM
And, if I lose, I will buy ribs for your station house so you can tell your fellow firefighters thats what happens when people (except for Audra) decide to throwdown with you!
