Optimal health requires sleep!

In Support of Shut-Eye (from Alive.com)
When we sleep, our cells regenerate. The skin eliminates waste and the body circulates nutrients and hormones. There’s a reason Grandma recommended bed rest for a cold: that’s when the body’s immunity strengthens, infection-fighters form and strength is conserved to battle unwanted invaders.
A good night’s rest promotes faster recovery from injury and illness, increases brain function and reduces stress. A study last January in the Archives of Internal Medicine confirmed that too little sleep might raise the risk of heart disease. Of about 72,000 nurses, those with five or less hours a night were 39 per cent more likely to develop heart disease than eight-hour sleepers. Similarly, nurses getting six hours nightly were 18 per cent more likely to develop blocked arteries.
Lack of sleep causes irritability and inability to concentrate. Sleeplessness is also a major contributor to absenteeism, work inefficiency and car accidents. This is because many of us have disturbed sleep patterns or don’t get enough. Yet our bodies were biologically built to rest. read more:http://www.alive.com/1373a4a2.php?text_page=2
HARVARD DIVSION OF SLEEP MEDICINE:

How many hours a night of shut-eye do you get? What are your experiences with performance and sleep deprivation? What are your pre-bed rituals (easy there Nabil and Daniel)? Post to comments.

7 hours + 1 nap almost every afternoon
I usually take a shot of nyquil with my toothbrushing. Seems to work for me.
Murph was just posted for tomorrow.
I'd love to see a double digit CFO rx'd total.
Good luck everyone!
I don't remember what it feels like to go to bed without anticipation of waking up through night. Lately I have been trying meditation and sleeping with music to offset the screaming citizens and snoring fat guys I work with. I have learned to appreciate a better diet and naps whenever I can get one.
Sleep is a harder one for me...I did tell a very drunk Edgar that it is not worth going to sleep (at night) if you have to wake up in less than four hours. The origin of the rule was during more interesting times... (Still hanging out at 4AM but have an 8AM class--just keep on hanging--no point in leaving now.) Now it more often than not applies to work. But it still works. Just apply caffeine as needed the following day. (and under eye make up for us girls!)
I'm going to bed now.
LB, for the last hour and a half i've just been boiling up inside. what is up with white people? just because my face was really, really red and my eyes were really, really slitty doesn't mean that i was "drunk." Angela, you gotta set these people straight...
i was however, high like a motherfucker...
Audra and Tam: you are stellar!
Mmmm...sleep....maybe I'll go back to bed instead of doing Murph.
I'm lucky to get 7 hrs on week nights. I'm up at 4:45 to catch the 5:38 BART, at work by 7 and don't get home until after 6... then CFO 7-8 or so... I'd like to get more sleep, but it's hard for me to get to bed before 10.
What's the consensus on working out just before bed? I've read things ranging from 'it's bad' to 'it doesn't matter'
Edgar--my bad! Next time I see you like that--and for that matter--Angela and all asian people--I will assume that it is the opium you all smoke and *not* alchol. Forgive me. Whiteness can sometimes be a curse...
Sleep: Average 7 hours
Bed Time Rituals: A cup of warm milk and a small square of dark chocolate (or 1/4 cup cottage cheese), while sitting in my black leather chair overlooking Oakland, with my cat sleeping on my lap. Very relaxing.
Murph: A you f***ing kidding me??? This is in the same category as "Dental Grace: Using only your teeth to grip the bar, clean 135# from the floor 30 times. Chalk is acceptable, padding of any kind is not." Looks like a good day to start strentgh training.
Blofeld? Is that you?
> Looks like a good day to start strength training.
If you think doing heavy squats every workout is a party, I've got a bridge to sell you.
> I will assume that it is the opium you all smoke and *not* alchol.
Uh-oh. :)
> If you think doing heavy squats every workout is a party, I've got a bridge to sell you.
True, but lifting pain is a pain I understand. With MetCon I feel like a kitten being tortured: I know it hurts, but I don't know how to make it stop or why people are being so mean to me.
LB, there you go, making assumptions again. which, if you read the recent post on "What White People like to do" is somewhere around the top 2. In all seriousness tho, Angela and I have received exclusive deal rights and are partnering with the accupressure spa on the corner - a kind of 1 stop shop for holistic and herbal relaxation. which TomC has so aptly pointed out, you may be in need of... of course you will need the special FOA (friend of asian) password to get in. feel free to contact me privately if you are interested. ;)
This is pure gold.
I didn't point out anything, at least I don't remember pointing out anything. If you make LB think I did say something, she's gonna give the verbal equivalent of a severe beating in public. No can do. I've been flying under her radar for the past few months and I fear what you may have awakened.
Hey, Mike:
Ahhhh... Much better.
really Tom, tho i could be mistaken i thought you told me LB was nothing but a little pussy with a big meow (though i will admit that i crossfit at 6am partly as a precautionary measure. perhaps we'll see you then also)...
The best part about doing Murph this morning: the bacon cheeseburger and chocolate shake I felt justified in having for lunch. Mmmm.
As a matter of fact I do feel like a tortured kitten... Seriously, how are you supposed to actually function throughout your day after a workout like that? yowza!
6am crew: I wish I had been able to congratulate you all this morning, but I was suffering in HELL, so here it is:
- Joe in under 60 minutes rocked!
- Kim, Lance, Hannah - nice showing..
- Edgar: Tough on the outside, sporting the weighted vest that rubbed a nice raw spot on his back and soft on the inside, coming back after he was finished to run the last 4oom with me on the final mile. Did you think I was taking a nice snooze on the corner of 45th/Adeline?
- Connie - THANK YOU for being a masochisitic bitch (you know I am totally kidding). Thanks for knowing I could do it when I did not.
Sorry for the long post. I *heart* Murph....
Tom, there was actually an extensive letter writing campaign involved in my giving you a break online... And you are right, that break is totally over.
Edgar, I am totally down with accupressure so long as the pressure is targeted, deep and builds slowly, if you think you are up for it, I will need a password.
I'm doomed.
Edgar, my brothah, and LB, my wannabe Asian sistah:
Can't we all just get along? Why you got to call me out on the internet like this?
Now we gotta give LB the secret Asian password AND the secret Lesbian handshake so she can work on her snatch next door...
But LB, you are sworn to secrecy, even if Miss Bakersfield begs you to disclose the handshake!
Edgar:
...do not be mistaken, I am a little and tight pussy with a big meow.
And now I have all the passwords. BTW-Angela, I got the secret lesbian handshake in college.
woo, slow down girl. you don't have ALL the passwords, yet... but damn, how did you know that among the many techniques i'm profecient at, the "targeted, deep, and builds slowly" is one of my specialties? back to the password, i'm not blowing that up all in public - we can't have any riff raff coming up hitting the buzzer and asking for "two ordas of shlimp flied lice to go" angela and i are trying to run a classy joint...
and tom, don't worry. when i get through with her she'll be back to just being a little pussy with a big meow...
just curious -
is there a "secret asian lesbian" handshake?
BTW, Edgar...I've been meaning to as: do you still go to the gym and workout or do you just exclusively attend CFO parties?
Angela, you didn't answer Brad's question. Deflection noted. Brad, Allen was just asking that same question.
Mais oui, madame!
But more importantly, Amy.
1. Why does Allen want to know?
2. Why are you asking for him?
3. Why not ask LB since she claims she knows?
not classy
Whoa...Contrary to what Amy said, I was not asking about secret ALH's or anything of the sort...I just thought Brad's comment was pretty funny, and Amy took it on herself to inject me into the conversation. However, if there was one, I would not be averse to proper instruction in its form and function. That is all.
Dental Grace: awesome.
Sleep: I shoot for 8 hours, usually get at least 7, sometimes 9 if I'm playing catch-up or feeling particularly exhausted. Any less than that isn't enough for me and necessitates napping if at all possible. Sleep is extremely important for me and I generally make getting enough of it a priority. Lack of sleep leads to decreased performance, lack of energy, grouchiness, and decreased immune function. Usually when I get sick I haven't been sleeping enough.
Perhaps not, but I will take this over the verbal fistfights that erupt over politics on the national site.
I apologize for my comment here. I crossed a line in an attempt to be funny and was inappropriate instead. I hope I did not offend anyone too badly.
Thanks.

LB:
All I can say is: "You go girl."
1. I'm with Tom, I'll take this over the political discourse.
2. I think your comments are mild compared to other comments I've seen on this site.
3. You'll never catch me apologizing to a poster that posts an objection under a psuedonym.
Now, let's see who's got class.
