Bay Area Affiliate Throwdown This Saturday, May 24 at 10am!

Just as you never know exactly what you're gonna roll with the dice, so shall it be with this Saturday's Affiliate Throwdown, which begins at 10am.

All Bay Area CrossFit Affiliates have been invited so it should be a blast. We'll be running our normal weekend schedule, it's just that if you happen to come to the 10am class, you'll be getting a special workout (the 9am and 4pm classes will run as usual).

For the Throwdown this Saturday, we'll be doing a live drawing and creating the workout on the spot. It will involve a gymnastics move, a weightlifting move, and a run of a length to be determined. Oh, and we'll draw the number of rounds and reps, too!

Also, we'll be having a beer-and-barbecue celebration afterwards as well, so even if you don't wanna take part in the Throwdown, come by for some good food and drink. We're asking that everyone contribute $10 to the pot to cover food and alcohol expenses.

Other Reminders

* Because of the Throwdown, the flexibility class with Dawn will be moving to Sunday at 11am.

* We'll be running our weekend schedule on Memorial Day Monday (9am, 10am, and 4pm).

Post to comments whether you'll be taking part in the Affiliate Throwdown this Saturday!

My layover for work just cancelled, will try my best to find someone or else I will be there in spirit!

Hey, I've got a weekend reminder! There will be a barbecue at my house, 2701 Park Blvd. in Oakland on Sunday the 25th from about 3 to 8. Anyone from CFO is welcome. My phone is 510-316-6024 for further info or to tell me you're coming.

For anyone that is looking for a good rest day workout they should talk to Lau about going on a mountain bike ride.
Things to consider bringing include:
1) Extra derailers
2) Extra derailer hangers
3) Inner Tubes (I suggest a minimum of 3 since 2 wasn't enough for me)
4) Extra spokes for your wheels.
5) Spare Rim & Tire. (This could be left at home if you bring enough of items 1-4 because you won't be riding on the rubber-less, egg shaped, 4 spokes short excuse for a wheel that I ended up with)
6) Extra lights (+ extra batteries)
7) Food + Water
8) Tape measure so that you can see if you actually set a world record in the bike throw after running out of item # 3 at 10:30 p.m. 10 miles north of nowhere.
9) If you did actually set the record (which I’m pretty sure I hold now) you will also need an extra set of rear brakes because you will be required to boot fuck them off your bike as a celebration of your accomplishment.
9) Patience (this is mostly for the rest of the group that has to ride circles around you while you drag your ass home.

Seriously people…give it a try.

Thanks Lau! Despite all…it was a good time!

Daniel -

Maybe you should stick with things you are good at - like hand stand push-ups, muscle-ups for time, and watching the Lion King on Broadway.

Amy and i will miss the throwdown this weekend - we're going climbing on the east side of the sierras for the weekend. good luck to all those who compete!

Daniel, sounds like you had a great time destroying your bike, did you actually get any riding in?

Happy Birthday to Sierra. You are such a strong and beautiful woman, i wish you the best!!!

Sierra, Oh and have a great time in Hollywood. If you happen to run into my boyfriend, Gerard Butler, make sure you give him a kiss for me and tell him I look forward to him visiting me in Oakland soon!! Oh but do be discreet if you see Gerard and my other bf Jay-Z also happens to be around, I don't want Jay to be jealous, but it shouldn't be a problem as I think that Jay is in NY. Ok, have fun!!

Daniel-
Don't forget a radar gun. I pretty sure you set a land speed record for mountain bike decent with no air in the rear tire and no rear brakes.

"Guttsiest move I ever saw Mav!"

Also I have to vouch for Daniel, b/c Lau didn't see it, the bike throw was rather impressive. The snatches and 2 pood KB swings are definitely paying off!

So let it be written. So let it be done. I will be attending.

Daniel, your post was classic. It makes me want to put on my dorky bike helmet, my super dorky yellow pant-leg velcro thing, my super cool red panniers filled with Zone-favorable snacks, and take my unsuspended bike complete with fenders and skinny tires into the back country for a very technical mountain bike party.

RE: Daniel'sand Tamara's sunscreen comments yesterday - There is some pretty compelling evidence that wearing sunscreen does not prevent skin cancer (i.e. people that do and don't use it seem to get skin cancer at about the same rates in studies). It may be that those who use it spend more time in the sun, or are more susceptible to cancer genetically, or it may be that the chemicals used in sunscreens are carcinogenic, hard to say.

Sunscreen does however prevent sunburn, and those who burn repeatedly are more likely to get skin cancer.

So if you have dark skin and don't get sunburned you may not need sunscreen after all. The melanin in dark skin is basically a natural sunscreen. If you are lucky enough to have a lot of it, you are already protected and don't need to slather a bunch of potientially cancer-causing chemicals in a sticky white ooze on your skin.

Also, sunscreen prevents the formation of vitamin D in your skin, so moderate sun exposure sans sunscreen is good for everyone (and it improves your mood).

It also may cut down on the glare coming off of us white guys, which I'm sure everyone will appreciate.

I'm planning on being at the Throwdown, although my in-laws are going to be in town, so my time is not completely my own.

...and Happy Birthday, Sierra!

There is some pretty compelling evidence that wearing sunscreen does not prevent skin cancer

Are you sh*tting me? If that's true, then I don't feel so badly about getting burned last week. Do you have a link?

So what you're saying Allen is...I will age better not only because I am better looking but becuase of my melanin. I guess it's true what "they" say, black don't crack!!!

Sorry Tom, you're out of luck. getting burned does increase you chances of skin cancer. I don't have a link offhand but go to mercola.com or google and search on sunscreen + cancer and you'll find a few articles i'm sure.

Sunscreen is useful for preventing sunburn, which in turn prevents cancer. But a lot of people wear it every day, thinking that is cancer prevention, when it probably isn't.

In my opinion sunscreen should be reserved for when you will be out in the sun for extended periods, to prevent sunburns. Just my opinion, based on research I've seen and common sense. We need regular UV exposure to make vitamin D and probably other important things as well, and sunscreen interferes with that. And we don't really know what the long term effects of putting all those chemicals on our skin are.

I think Titanium Dioxide is supposed to be the safest active ingredient as it has a physical blocking action similar to melanin rather than a chemical action on the skin cells.

I've heard what Allen is suggesting in his posts above, too.

That a little bit of good ol' fashioned sunshine (particularly for the vitamin D benefits) every day is the way to go, stopping short of the point where you get sunburned.

So if you're a super pale guy like me, five to ten minutes in the sun during summertime is just about right. Enough for me to get some useful sun exposure, but not too much that I end up getting burnt.

Tamara - nice try to front with your farmer tan...my pale ass is even darker than your true skin color!! :)

The rules of the CrossFit Games affiliate cup are now posted:

The CrossFit Games Affiliate Cup will be contested by affiliate teams. A team will consist of at least 2 men and 2 women from the same affiliate. You can have as many athletes from your affiliate participate as you want. Your team score will simply be the cumulative scores of your top 2 men and top 2 women.

My reading of this is that they mean top 2 overall men and women, not top 2 in each event.

Sorry to hear about that "ass" problem you have Audge. Maybe you should see a doctor, and while you are there pay a little extra to have some muscles implanted in your arms.

Tamara, I'm saying that you will age better because you ARE better, (and more evolved) than us pale folk. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise, no matter what color their ass is or how many GHD situps they can do.

Farmer tans rock, by the way...that's the only kind I ever get! Maybe Mike and I missed our true calling - although he got the John Deer hat and I used to drive a John Deer tractor so we got that going for us.

LOL !!

Happy birthday Sierra! Even though you obviously suffer just getting up to make it in the door sometimes, you are always a great contributor to the 6am spirit!

Happy Birthday, Sierra!

you are always a great contributor to the 6am spirit!

I think you're right, Sherrill, regarding the CF Games rules. Look like overall performance from top two men and women.

Good catch!

Happy Birthday Sierra! Hope you have a lovely day!

Happy Birthday Sierra!

Hi, this is Andres from CrossFit Marin. I'm going to try to make it to the throw down depending how many business errands are still on the To-Do list. I'll try to drag Roger Harrell and some other athletes along with. Hopefully we'll see you guys there.

I'll be at the throwdown but I swear to GOD - if burpees come up in the hopper, I will quit CFO on the spot. And I will take the water cups and that pullup pulley/harness contraption with me.

Andres,

are you going to do the games in boots again this year?

Daniel,

I am bummed I missed the world record bike toss. Next time we will run the bunny slopes during the day time so you don't break your bike. We got to get you back on that thing sooner than later.

I will be doing a lot more night rides in the future if you have some experience and want to join. I would also love to put together a CFO group ride where we can ride some fun but mellow trails for the less experienced.

Happy Birthday Sierra

I always have fun coaching and working out with you.

I'm up for CFO group rides. Especially if Daniel makes sure to bring items 1-9. In fact, considering his #1 ranking in throwdown, I think he should carry extra parts, food, etc., for all of us.

Lau-
Why on earth do we need "mellow trails" what was wrong with the constant 2000 foot climb as a warm up, 50mph crosswinds while on a single track with a 500 foot drop just 2 feet to the right of the trail (although I can't be sure of the drop b/c it was 10pm and pitch black).. oh and rocks the size of my 19" Sanyo TV (tube, not plasma or LCD)
(Daniel can confirm that I'm not exaggerating a bit here!)

And just for the record, Lau is a freakin beast for doing all that climbing on a single speed bike!! He totally dominated me with my 24 speeds of "mechanical advantage".

Happy B-Day Sierra, god if I'd known when I saw you this morning...it would have been all about Mike's b-day song solo that he loves to do on top of a plyo box with jazz hands--shucks! another time!

By the way, you look fantastic! Your dedication is paying off big time (how many unbroken kips?)...

Happy Birthday, Sierra. May the power of heavy metal guide you through yet another happy and healthy year.

Allen, who are you calling pale? Have you seen my deep ebony skin tones? Yessir, I am almost impervious to the sun, although I managed to get a bit of a burn after spending 10 hours in the scorching heat last week.

Mike also mentioned the following:

Right on, brother. Right on!

do I need to nude up again? I am whitest of the whitest.
