C2B PU Starting Sept 1!
The new standard for pull-ups at CFO beginning Sept 1, 2008
In case the somewhat cryptic title of the post, along with the two photos above, doesn't clue you in, here it is: Starting Sept 1, all pull-ups will count only when chest touches bar (clavicle or lower).
Yes, this is the same standard that was employed at the CF Games this past weekend. And it's a tough one, to be sure. But the rewards far outweigh any reduced times or scores that may occur on workouts in the short term. This standard requires a higher degree of power output (primarily in the form of explosive hip extension), along with more coordination and accuracy, than the garden-variety kipping pull-up where chin simply has to go over bar.
So why Sept 1? Because this is a big change and it deserves a ramp-up period. A month and a half is a reasonable amount of time. So the current chin-over-bar is a lame duck, but still good through August 31.
Post cheers, boos, and impressions to comments.
And also, we need to do a final vote on a place to meet up tomorrow night (Fri 7/11/08) to celebrate Team CFO's victory at the CF Games. So here are the two choices: Luka's or Kitty's. Post your vote to comments.

Looks to me like the show-offs in the photos are doing sternum rather than clavicle touching, which is overcompensating, I mean, overachieving.
I vote Luka's, for party.

booooo! just kidding. just in time for me to be able to do pullups again, now I have to step up and do chest to bar. great.
please no Luka's. that place is a zoo. no where with a cover charge. that's lame.
Posted by: Jonathan at July 10, 2008 8:39 PM
I like the beer at Luka's, but I agree that trying to get a big group in there on a Friday night is crazy. I've never been to Kitty's, so I can't comment on that.
Being old and married, I have limited experience with the local bar scene, which is why I haven't said anything yet. George & Walt's isn't a bad idea, and just down the street is another option at the Hut (http://www.yelp.com/biz/ye-olde-hut-oakland).
As for the new pullup standard, I'm always up for higher standards!

Damn! Just when I was getting close to a pull-up....
Posted by: Bill at July 10, 2008 9:24 PM
I was thinking of adopting this pullup style to help me with muscle ups. It also completely destroyed my Fran time at the Games, which is a positive sign. I went from a sub-seven minute Fran to a twelve minute Fran thanks to those pullups (and a few other factors generally involving my lack of toughness).
I vote that everyone comes over to my apartment Friday night. I don't have nearly enough seating, but my place could easily accommodate 20 to 30 people. I'm also located right on Lake Merritt, which is very convenient for me. There would be no cover charge and it would be more than quiet enough so that people could actually hear one another when speaking. It's may be too late to pull that off for this Friday, but it's something to think about.

Kitty's

Love the new pull up standard. The higher we set the bar the higher we will climb. There is no arrival.
Posted by: Lau at July 10, 2008 9:50 PM
Since I have nothing better to do than look at CrossFit stuff, I wanted to point out that several CFO peeps show up in Friday's video that appears on the main site. Audra and Patrick make prominent appearances.
Posted by: TomC at July 10, 2008 9:52 PM
You guys are touching your freakin belly in those pics. Closer to a muscle up. Oh well, there goes my 10 pullups... back to work.
Hey, what about the Conga Lounge on College... Happy hour from 5-7 with cheap, wicked-strong tropical drinks. Plus, you can order of the Pizza Rustica menu.
Posted by: james p at July 10, 2008 9:53 PM
I'd vote for the Conga Lounge. Probably not too crowded now that school's out. Also right near many of the aforementioned bars (George & Walt's, the Hut, Ben & Nicks).
Speaking of the new pullup standard and muscle-ups, maybe it will help us start looking like these guys, and we can start posting CFO videos on YouTube.
Posted by: Brad Greenlee at July 10, 2008 10:09 PM
I vote that Lance has diplomatic immunity in regards to posting comments. Afterall, he's in the video on the main site not only beating Brandon in the run, but also leading the pack.
At the very least he should be granted with a NC-17 comment capability.
Posted by: Nabil at July 10, 2008 10:10 PM
A Hut patron (regulars call it the Slut, apparently, which certainly fits yesterday's comments nicely) says:
"This is one of the few bars I've been to wearing sweats and felt overdressed, because my sweats were clean."
So folks who don't understand about rest days, and go get all sweaty at CFO don't have to shower or change before coming. What's not to love?
The Conga Lounge is not a bad idea. Rustica's rotisserie chicken is pretty good.
Posted by: Sherrill at July 10, 2008 10:12 PM
the conga lounge is about 10x10, so a large group there would be tough. the hut is always good if you're up for a semi-dive. pool tables + a fire place. I also just realized I've been to Kitty's, and it's kind of a scene. lots of people and i've seen a line out the door there. but I've only been a couple of times, so i'm no expert.
maybe....... thalassa on shattuck. it can get busy and loud but it's huge.
Posted by: Jonathan at July 10, 2008 10:24 PM
what about Pyramid? i've never been there on a friday, though, so I'm not sure. Lane Splitter? school's out, so Raleigh's on telegraph might not be too bad, and they have pretty good pub food, good beer and a big outdoor area. actually, the more I think about that idea the more I like it. what do you think? Raleigh's?
Posted by: Jonathan at July 10, 2008 10:35 PM
Kitty's. End of discussion.
Chest-up's, that's cool. I'm just glad I broke the 3 min barrier in Fran before we decided to step-up our game. Daniel, how is your 3:18 Fran doing?
Posted by: Brandon at July 11, 2008 7:12 AM
Lance - Please reserve for me a 5-block meal of whatever you're cooking on Monday. I won't be back in time to order it on Sunday. Thanks!
Posted by: Bill at July 11, 2008 8:17 AM
Conga Lounge - always wanted to check that place out! But only if Tami can make it.
If Tami can only make Luka's, then that is my vote - plus the Lydia hook-up is a great plus (thanks Lydia)...
Posted by: Robyn at July 11, 2008 8:22 AM
Robyn -
u r right, Luka's for Tamara.
2nd choice -
Raleighs back patio.
Posted by: brad gilliatt at July 11, 2008 8:52 AM
I like the idea of Raleigh's, too.
Posted by: Mike Minium at July 11, 2008 9:08 AM
Hey Robyn-
Hate to break it to you but it sounds like you don't have much pull, Brandon did say, "Kitty's. End of discussion." ;)) But let me know asap if you need me to call that guy, cause I don't want to have him do anything if the whole crew is not in agreement. Call/text me, 415.317.7795, before like 4:00 today.
Can't wait to see the whole CFO crew all cleaned up- meaning no bloody hands and sweat dripping from every pore of the body...

"Can't wait to see the whole CFO crew all cleaned up- meaning no bloody hands and sweat dripping from every pore of the body."
Clearly you've never gone out with them before.
Posted by: Bill at July 11, 2008 10:07 AM
I say Raleigh's at 7pm. If it's no good, we can move on to Plan B.
The plus about Raleigh's is lots of table space out back on the patio, as others have already mentioned.
Posted by: Mike Minium at July 11, 2008 10:27 AM
Raleigh's @ 7 pm. End of discussion.
Posted by: Brandon at July 11, 2008 10:39 AM
Brandon,
Don't worry about my 3:16 Fran. How are your HSPU & Muscle ups? Can you do 30 Muscle ups in under 2 calendar days yet?
Raleigh's it is!
Posted by: daniel at July 11, 2008 10:47 AM
There's been an uprising. The parking situation is bad at Raleigh's.
So here's the deal now.
George & Walt's at 7pm. It's on College Ave (Oakland end of College, near that Thai place Soi 54).
Let the drinking and banter begin.
End of discussion.
Posted by: Mike Minium at July 11, 2008 10:50 AM
mike,
sounds like an executive decision.
Posted by: michael g at July 11, 2008 11:03 AM
Daniel,
You know and I know, and you know that I know that no one at CF cares about muscle-ups for time or HSPU's. One's Fran time in Crossfit is the equivalent to someone's bench press max at 24 hour fitness. But if you feel the need to compensate by doing endless HSPU's, that's cool too.
Posted by: Brandon at July 11, 2008 11:09 AM
Actually, no I have never gone out with the crew, so perhaps I will be in for a surprise and bloody hands and sweaty bodies are the norm no matter where we go... Either way, I can't wait!
George & Walt's it is! Thanks for taking the reigns on that Mike, I was imagining this "pleasing everybody" process getting much uglier.
On the pull-up front though, It's all out of reach for me right now, I almost hung myself with the blue rubber band on Tuesday, so if you asked me to do a one arm pullup with a 90 lb weight strapped to my ankle I'd say, sounds about right for a Crossfit workout, how do I get started? I do love the fact that the bar is constantly being raised, no room for slackers here!
Posted by: Lydia at July 11, 2008 11:29 AM
Oh Lydia, don't even get me started on the blue rubber band! That thing is a total death-trap. I've decided I'd rather take 40 minutes to do 100 pullups than risk tearing off my chin with that beast of a band. See you tonight!
Posted by: sierra at July 11, 2008 11:42 AM
Brandon,
I know that you know that I know the only way to to really know who is best is to do a little Fran-off. So that were both rested, lets do it in two weeks. Mike standards, and the loser buys the winner two 5 block meals from Lance.
Posted by: daniel at July 11, 2008 11:42 AM
George & Walt's
Posted by: Lau at July 11, 2008 11:47 AM
Robyn,
Thanks for looking out but I'm ok with the fact that no one cares if I can make it or not, it's not your fault I have to work today :) I realized how little my opinion counts when I got laughed at for offering to cook at work today, two people actually tackled me when I tried to enter the kitchen. I make one simple mistake with Jiffy cornbread and all hell breaks loose. Hope your days is better than mine ;)
Posted by: Tamara at July 11, 2008 11:52 AM
Brandon-
You mentioning your sub-3 minute Fran time (pre-C2B standards) is the equivalant of a 40-year old man telling his kids how he was an all-league tight end in high school. Irrelevant.
I also like how Daniel corrected Brandon when he misrepresented his Fran time by 2 seconds.
I should have seen this tension building when I watched the latest video you guys sent me (from your Couples Cooking Class) and there was clearly a power struggle when it came to who was going to hold the Kabob meat and who was going to work the skewers.
Posted by: Nabil at July 11, 2008 11:58 AM
I am a whole new kind of sore after doing angie with clavicle over bar (didn't even touch on most of them, and it still took me a lot longer than last time to do the pullups). I think the new standard is much better than the old chin-over-bar.
That old standard encouraged bad form, reaching, and excessive, repetitive neck extension, and was a lot easier. The new one is going to make us a LOT stronger.
I was discussing the new standard with Lau and Mike the other day. I was initially skeptical of the importance of actually hitting the bar with your chest, rather than just getting over it. But hey, it is harder and more powerful, so let's go with it.
Posted by: Allen at July 11, 2008 12:07 PM
Just doing angie while getting my chin over the bar felt like this.

This just in...I have some amazing information regarding John Welbourne. Details will be given at drinks tonight.
Daniel,
I only accept challenges from people in the sub 3 min Fran club. Sorry.

> This just in...I have some amazing information regarding John Welbourne.
He's going to quit football to become a professional CrossFitter.
He fell madly in love with Nabil and is moving to the Bay Area.
He wants a life-size cutout of Mike Minium and he's willing to pay top dollar for it.
After this weekend, he discovered that his is true passion is Argentinian Tango and all this exercise is a waste of time.

7? holy early, batman. I have a physical therapy appt at 7:30, and was planning on going to the 6:00 class tonight. what about 8 or something?
Posted by: Jonathan at July 11, 2008 2:37 PM
T- they are just ignoring you because it hurts to much to think about how you CRUSHED their attempts to place in the top 10... It's not a true celebration without you. Maybe you can steal a truck and sneak over - noone will notice (shhhh)
Mike - 7pm? need that beauty sleep? or are the free drinks such a draw? I will buy you a cold one - don't fret....
Posted by: Robyn at July 11, 2008 2:48 PM
Jonathon - You can join in whenever you are availble, I'm sure, you will just have some catching up to do. :-)

This just in...I have some amazing information regarding John Welbourne.
I know what it is... He heard about our prospective offering of MJJ and he wants to make us an offer. I think we should hold out for a higher price and 2 swedish, midget masseurs... especially after MJJ's posting for the Crossfit Total Wednesday, that should definitely boost his price..

btw - if anyone is driving by Piedmont on their way to G&W's and wouldn't mind swinging by my place - let me know. Save me bus fare...
Posted by: Robyn at July 11, 2008 3:19 PM
Robyn or anyone else in North Oakland/South Berkeley need a ride, let me know.
But, be forewarned, I'm a terrible driver, you'll want to bring a helmet and protective clothing.

Hi Mike,
I've been forgetting to get/pay for the t-shirt I had ordered. I'll try to remember tomorrow morning.
