Special Meeting: CrossFit Games 2009

cfo_group_blog.jpg

I want to call a mandatory meeting this Friday, July 25 at 6pm for all members of the 2008 CF Games team (Team CFO), as well as any prospective members for our 2009 team.

We'll be discussing upcoming throwdowns, how frequently we want to participate in challenges with other CF affiliates in the Bay Area, and a few other thoughts I have regarding the defense of our title!

In order to get the conversation started ahead of the meeting, post to comments your thoughts on training for next year's CF Games.

Mike- Could you please email me suggested the weight for my strength training? send to journey.meadows@ucsf.edu
Thanks

Posted by: Journey at July 20, 2008 11:09 PM

strength strength strength (for me at least) for the hill run forgo running marin, practice on uneven sandlike terrain if possible (connector trail is pretty good) and lots of sleep and strict diet are my suggestions.

Posted by: Journey at July 20, 2008 11:12 PM

i won't be in oakland in 2009, but can I be part of the CFO team anyway?

Posted by: Jonathan at July 20, 2008 11:45 PM

This might be obvious, but a year is a long time. You'll need to break this up into three or four cycles of training, with strength, metcon, peak performance in competition, and recovery built into each period. Attacking this as one long slog to next July will lead to burnout and injury, both physical and mental.

Also, think about how those of us not likely to be competitors at next year's games can help. I'm not sure what that means, but I know I felt a tremendous sense of pride with CFO's win this year, and I wasn't even at the games to cheer you on. If there's any way I can help over the next year, please don't hesitate to ask.

Wish I could make it! Cooking for the family until 8:30.. Any chance of scheduling the meeting another time??? Not in the group picture and now the mandatory meeting. That's ____ up.

Posted by: lance at July 20, 2008 11:55 PM

Robyn- you would be lost trying to eat that paella, and you know it...

Posted by: lance at July 21, 2008 12:04 AM

Bill - nice post, I share your thoughts.

Posted by: brad gilliatt at July 21, 2008 6:58 AM

Ok, I know it sounded bad, but I was NOT propositioning Candace, simply encouraging her cooking skills. I should have known better...

Posted by: Robyn at July 21, 2008 7:35 AM

I'll be there - I'll take notes for Lance. This is what happens when you're a man-on-the-go. In a hurry to pack up gear and get gone, you miss the picture. Feeding family after family, you miss the meeting.
Strenth is soemthing I'm working on. And understanding the whole active recovery thing. That's a tough one for me.

Posted by: sierra at July 21, 2008 8:03 AM

I am going to be out of town too. Can't we have it another night!?!

How about Thursday night. Mike, you know how you have those personal training sessions on Thursday and that lovely hour in between when you get bored... that could work.

Or... alternatively, Wednesday night. A night when most people should be RESTING (ahem, Brandon).

Mike can we switch the date? PLEASE! DOUBLE PLEASE! Mike, don't make me whine!

Posted by: Candace at July 21, 2008 8:26 AM

ill, uhm... be there

Posted by: steven at July 21, 2008 9:29 AM

Since Candace is now the public face of CFO, I second her motion. However, I should be able to make it any night this week.

> Ok, I know it sounded bad, but I was NOT propositioning Candace

Sure...

> Not in the group picture and now the mandatory meeting. That's ____ up.

For the record, I asked several times where you were before that group picture was taken. No answers were forthcoming.

Posted by: TomC at July 21, 2008 10:00 AM

Seems like the March madness pain fest was an experience that needs to be carefully evaluated. On the one hand it really made people step up to a new level, on the other, some folks ended up dying for points, or at least, injuring themselves.

My thoughts on CFO future glory: bragging rights are worth more than money, especially with today's weak dollar. Let's not sell MJJ, but instead, keep him working on those pull ups.

Posted by: Sherrill at July 21, 2008 10:17 AM

I am out of town starting Wednesday for one week...If we reschedule, Tuesday night would rock. But I understand that the world does not revolve around me...yet. Seriously excited about the meeting and helping out with future events.

Posted by: lb at July 21, 2008 10:18 AM

I very strongly believe that the world does indeed revolve around Lance, LB & Candace. Rescheduling sounds like a must at this point.

Physically I am going to be working on becoming more explosive. Olympic lifts, box jumps and sprinting are going to be the focus. I haven't decided if i will sub these kind of WODs during days that suit my strengths or just follow .com and fit it in when I can. Some discussion on how to attack your weaknesses while following .com might be beneficial for us all trying to get to that freakish athlete level.
Mentally I will be working on consistency and stress management. Its been very difficult the last few months with health and career obstacles to focus on my training. Some meditation/stress management activities would help the overall big picture.
Also, getting outside more. Running/mountain biking trails, bringing kb's to the park, etc. Doing WODs in the sun is a lot different than doing them inside and more fun. My folks have a beautiful place in the San Geronimo Valley that would be perfect for an afternoon WOD, swim and bbq CFO gathering. Anyone up for that?

For diet I am going to eat more Paleo with loose zone portions. Cook more at home, and not leave the house with out food and water.

> post to comments your thoughts on training for next year's CF Games

I've decided that the missing component to my athletic dominance is recovery. I am going to start my taper tomorrow, which should put me in good stead for next July. I will swear off of high-intensity exercise for the next year. Starting two weeks before the Games, I will hire someone to carry me around to make sure that I am completely fresh for the competition.

Of course, this rigorous training schedule would not be complete without proper dietary supplementation. I will be following my normal course of almost exclusively high-glycemic carbs, but I will add foods like pizza and marmite for greater muscle growth. Any vegetables will be strictly limited and avoided wherever possible.

> My folks have a beautiful place in the San Geronimo Valley that would be perfect for an afternoon WOD, swim and bbq CFO gathering. Anyone up for that?

Definitely! I might even make an exception to my aforementioned exercise taper to attend.

Posted by: TomC at July 21, 2008 11:24 AM

Wow, "mandatory", sounds serious!

Manwell and I would like to attend as prospective candidates for 2009. In an effort to continue the impossible task of trying to please everyone, Manwell and I can pretty much do any day at 6:00 except Thursdays, so I will just keep up on the schedule changes and try my hardest to attend.

For my upcoming training I will pretty much be doing what I am told, unless of course you insist on scheduling all the events on "work" days- that is 9-5 M-F. Although I would love to center my life around Crossfit, my excessive spending and hatred of cooking do not allow me to quit my job.

Lau, I love the "FREAKISH ATHLETE LEVEL" Thanks for the inspiration!!!

Lau -

I just spoke with your folks. I'm moving in this weekend. Nice people.

Posted by: brad gilliatt at July 21, 2008 1:18 PM

I'm also going to be out of town on Friday.

Posted by: daniel at July 21, 2008 1:50 PM

> I'm also going to be out of town on Friday.

The Lion King, or Toy Story Mania?

Posted by: TomC at July 21, 2008 2:51 PM

Tom,
I'm taking Candace to my grandma's house so that she can learn how to cook from a seasoned pro while I go fishing, shooting and causing general mayhem.

Posted by: daniel at July 21, 2008 3:08 PM

OK, so I really wasn't into the idea of changing the meeting day and time, but now that I've learned I may be infringing on Daniel's right to bear arms and cause general mayhem, I'm all for changing the meeting.

But seriously, Nicole and I are looking at Wed at 8pm. I know this is a little late for some of you all, but that's the best we can do at this point.

And sorry LB, we just can't get it rescheduled prior to Wed at this point.

And in case you all wanna revel in CFO Games glory some more, check out today's post on the CF Games website.

We got quite a nice plug, and many thanks should go to Tom C for putting together the video.

I'm not sure who the old, gray, skinny guy in the photo they chose for the blog entry is, but oh well.

Posted by: Mike Minium at July 21, 2008 4:07 PM

8 on wednesday is good. Allen and I will be there. For me, training for '09 is all about aerobic stamina and getting those holes filled in well and smooth. Just wish there weren't so gosh darn many of them!

Posted by: Amy at July 21, 2008 4:59 PM

Tom: your slide show rules, nice music too.
Audra and Brandon: I envy your mitochondria, God only knows how much I'd like to borrow them/harvest them/or just plain use them!! You crushed the filthy. (Reminds me of an enormous cockroach I saw at work the other day, oops) Great job Tami today!

> fishing, shooting and causing general mayhem.

Daniel, is your neck turning a little red?

Posted by: Jonathan at July 21, 2008 6:10 PM

Daniel-
If you can, try to do some of this type of fishing. My favorite part is how the second guy enters the scene.

"That's a forty-five pounder if it's an ounce!!"
