BiancheTwo-FaceCropped80pc.jpg

DUEL
Pronunciation:
\ˈdü-əl also ˈdyü-\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English, from Medieval Latin duellum, from Old Latin, war
Date:
15th century

1: a combat between two persons; specifically : a formal combat with weapons fought between two persons in the presence of witnesses2: a conflict between antagonistic persons, ideas, or forces; also : a hard-fought contest between two opponents.

MJJ sparked an excellent idea this morning that we thought we should roll out to the entire membership! It's a way to play strengths and strengthen weaknesss CrossFit style, and we're calling it the "Love/Hate Duel"!

The next rest day (Friday) we would like for everyone to challenge their closest skill/strength matched CrossFit member(s) to a WOD-duel that incorporates at least two of each person's strengths and weaknesses. Mini and MJJ are going to go at it and below is an example of a WOD we came up with for their Love/Hate Duel:

18-12-6

Handstand Push-Ups
Burpees
Muscle Up
155# Squat Clean

Duel announcements and WODs to comments!

I call dibs on Brandon and a workout that involves handstand push-ups and muscle-ups.

Actually, outside of those, Brandon would destroy me, so who should I challenge? Lance? My strengths: the aforementioned HSPUs and MUs, rope climbs, plus maybe double-unders (at least relative to Lance :). Weaknesses: running, heavy thrusters or cleans, situps.

Posted by: Brad Greenlee at August 6, 2008 9:50 PM

Daniel you're mine! I pick running and rope climbs.

I can't do it on Friday, but perhaps Sunday. If you have any questions feel free to email me at the address below.

Even Barry Sears and his magical blocks won't be able to help you with this one!

Posted by: Nabil at August 6, 2008 10:21 PM

I challenge Audra and Connie to 225 lb squats for max reps.

Posted by: Brandon at August 6, 2008 11:02 PM

I challenge MJJ to dead lifts and Nabil to butterfly kips....

Posted by: Journey at August 7, 2008 4:58 AM

Nabil,
I'm down with that. Make up a WOD and I'll do it with you on Sunday.

You can send me an email with the details of the WOD at the address below.

Michael G - what do you say? Is it possible for us to do this? Kind of like our own Gimp Olympics?

I've been miserable all week. Been popping vicodin like candy, but I'm always down for a challenge.

Posted by: brad gilliatt at August 7, 2008 8:37 AM

Audra, Robyn, Dawn, Connie and Me!

2000 m Row

5 Rounds:

7 Pull Ups
7 135# Deadlifts
7 Burpees

50 Double Unders

Posted by: Nicole Okumu at August 7, 2008 9:19 AM

I challenge Fat Brad to a vicodin/burrito/merlot consumption contest.

Posted by: jp at August 7, 2008 10:18 AM

Watch your back Lance! Just to let you know your "weakness" were the topic of discussion today, as a love/hate WOD was being put together by an unnamed CFOer.

Posted by: mjj at August 7, 2008 11:43 AM

I think Brad Greenlee and Lance would be good sparring partners. I can't think of many people who need to scale as much as I do, so it looks as though I'll be challenging myself. Wow. That sounds like fun. It's like a game of tetherball for one, except I was actually good at that so people were up for a game.

Posted by: sierra at August 7, 2008 12:44 PM

Daniel-
You need to pick the other two exercises so that after I beat you there will be no excuses and you can save your sob story for Candace.

Questions can be directed to the email address below.

brad g

when i read mike's post i was hoping you'd be up for a challenge. unfortunately i'll be out of town tomorrow. how about the next rest day? my weaknesses are too numerous to list, but high on my list is running (one of your strengths) and box jumps. i am relatively less feeble in back extensions, ghd situps, deadlifts and jumping rope.

let me know what you propose.

Posted by: michael g at August 7, 2008 2:37 PM

since no one's pulled the gun on lance yet... perhaps this can be a bi-coastal challenge? I'll take 135lb OHS and muscle-ups. lance, what you got?

Posted by: edgar at August 7, 2008 3:31 PM

> 135lb OHS

That's no joke, Edgar. I'm impressed.

Posted by: TomC at August 7, 2008 3:35 PM

thanks, tom. we'll see what happens...

Posted by: edgar at August 7, 2008 3:41 PM

C'mon, Lance, represent the west coast!

Don't let Lin bully you into submission.

Throw your chips on the table!

Posted by: Mike Minium at August 7, 2008 3:42 PM

mike,

peer pressure doesn't work for old men, but maybe food will. Dinner at Lupa's your next trip out...

Posted by: edgar at August 7, 2008 3:46 PM

Nabil,
How about HSPU & OHS?

Or we could both just do Helen at the same time? Because that seems to be your true weakness!

...too much?

Posted by: daniel at August 7, 2008 3:50 PM

Edgar - if Lance doesn't take you on (he seems to be in hiding), I'd be happy to.

Posted by: Brad Greenlee at August 7, 2008 4:38 PM

Edgar- nice to hear from you!
I'm game for some bi-coastal challenge, perhaps cleaning 5# of fresh squid for time and braising any secondary cut of beef,(natural of course) strainging the jus, then reducing it into a sauce mounted with reggiano butter and fresh tarragon. As for your challenge, you have me beat before we start... My right shoulder is f*~ked up from using poor technic during Linda. I'm up for any challenge, as long as I don't need my shoulder.(need all parts of the body to work on my wedding night)

Posted by: lance at August 7, 2008 4:57 PM

dang, I just learned that Lance is human after all!

Lance, sorry to hear about your shoulder.

Funny Socks - I'm likely out all next week, so our "Duel" may be reduced to a "remember when...." saga over drinks.

JP - bad news today, I ran out of vicodin. Going to the dr's tomorrow. If he has 1/2 a heart he'll hook me up. And for the last time, it's "Phat" Brad.

Posted by: brad gilliatt at August 7, 2008 5:25 PM

Touche my dear Cobra Commander, touche.

HSPU and OHS it is!

Mike, will you please do the honor of constructing the rep/weight scheme for this challenge workout? (a run distance between 800 meters and 26 miles wouuld be prefered).

Posted by: Nabil at August 7, 2008 5:27 PM

brad

drinks are good. that used to be one of my stonger events.

Posted by: michael g at August 7, 2008 5:35 PM

I think Connor should help me figure out who can do this workout faster

2000m row
5 deadlifts @ 300#
30 KB swing 2pood
9 pullups c2b

1000m row
10 deadlifts @ 300#
15 kb swing 2pood
18 pullups c2b

500m row
20 deadlifts @300#
8 kb swing 2pood
36 pullups c2b

Posted by: Loren at August 7, 2008 5:52 PM

Dude Loren, you are one sick f*ck! That is an insane looking workout!!! I would like to see that one go down... actually I wouldn't mind participating as well. It just looks burly!

Posted by: Nabil at August 7, 2008 6:24 PM

lance, my brother, sorry to hear about your shoulder. we ain't like them young'uns. take care of yourself. love to you and sierra...

alright brad... let's do it. just to get some perspective on how much of an ass-whooping i'm going to be getting what did you do the last 30MU wod in? and what might the other 2 movements be? email me...

angela, looking forward to seeing you...

...CfO, thanks again for the dynamax. came in handy today. brandon's "west coast forever" got me through the last 25...

Posted by: edgar at August 7, 2008 7:27 PM

Edgar - ok...first I have to see if I can even do a 135# OH squat. I *think* I can...

My last 30 MU time was 10:04. Yours?

Mike or Nicole, care to help make an Edgar vs. Good Brad WOD? How about:

21 OH squat 135#
15 MUs
800m run
15 OH squat 135#
9 MUs
400m run
9 OH squat 135#
6 MUs
200m run

Posted by: Brad Greenlee at August 7, 2008 8:39 PM

Loren your workout looks kind of fun, in a Crossfit sort of way. As for good Brad's.....PASS!

Posted by: mjj at August 7, 2008 8:59 PM

Jesus, Loren. 20 deadlifts at 300 lbs on the last round? That's awful.

Posted by: TomC at August 7, 2008 9:40 PM

Since no one has challenged Brandon, I hereby challenge him to the following rest day workout:

Rest 30 minutes, repeat for as many rounds as possible.

Scaling is NOT ALLOWED!

(I may actually have a chance at this one!)

Posted by: Allen at August 7, 2008 9:43 PM

Allen,

You highly underestimate my resting skills. When I am not working out, I ride around in an electric wheel chair, controlling it with my mouth, Stephen Hawking style, in order to minimize any voluntary physical movement.

Posted by: Brandon B. at August 7, 2008 9:58 PM

Dude why is Brandon's score on today's wod notable? 2nd place is first place looser. Since when have we been giving these kind of notables? Do you know how many times I have been under a minute behind Brandon with no recognition? Am I jealous? Yes! Have I been kidnapping darker skinned men, keeping them in a pit in my basement, having it put lotion on it's skin, making a skin suit, tucking it between my legs, buying too much nike and over training just so I can feel like Brandon? Yes!

Posted by: Lau at August 7, 2008 9:59 PM

Lau, priceless!

Posted by: Amy at August 8, 2008 12:54 AM

Sounds like there are a few who want in on the row/dead workout. Connor, Nabil and MJJ, you guys up for that workout sunday?
