Thought experiment for you:

If you could pick three and only three exercises that best represent a broad and general fitness (and also, as a result, give you the greatest likelihood of acquiring that broad and general level of fitness), what would they be?

Consider the ability to use these exercises across broad time and modal domains (in other words, you should be able to use them for development of peak power or strength, as well as for metabolic conditioning).

Give your exercises and their reason for inclusion.

I would choose pullups, sprints, clean & jerks.

word of caution to the dancing routine... not for those easily offended.

I would second Tami's lists. Why? Pull ups for strength development of the trunk and upper body and the conditioning effect of kipping (so I'm told and maybe I'll know for myself someday).

I'd also guess that sprinting is hands down the best bang for your buck in terms of conditioning. The effects of working at that intensity on the release of growth hormone, the development of fast twitch fibers and the overall improved body comp can't be beat.

Clean and jerks: power production, agility, flexibility, balance, enhanced proprioception, etc. One question though: power or squat cleans? I think power cleans. Mike?

Also, if we could have 4, I'd add the MacDaddy back squat for the hormonal benefit and general "works every muscle in your body" nature of it.

I agree with Leigh, pull ups , cleans and jerks are all very effective. Box jumps too.
