We are wondering if any among you are interested in cost sharing a steer (~$2,400). Not to ride or lasso, to eat! We have found an excellent farm that will slaughter, cut, and package an entire Steer. That's a lot of meat, so be sure you have the freezer space!

Let us know if your interested, here: info@crossfitoakland.com

Post your opinion of a group steer share to comments.

I have been looking for a local farm that can do this. I'd be interested. I assume it's grass fed?

Certified organic and grass fed? Absolutely. I have 2 freezers in the garage standing by.

Damn. I wish I had the space for this because I would be all over it. Unfortunately, I can't do it.

Hell yes! I'm so in! But only if I can get a picture taken with the unlucky cow before the sh*t hits the fan. And a video of the big fella going through the whole process would be nice too. Seriously though, I really do want get in on some of this action. My freezer doesn't have much room though, Costco just had a huge sale on Hot Pockets, Bagel Bites, and Tater-Tots... guess I've got some eatin' to do!

At first I was really excited about the prospect of of a cow co-op. But after watching Nabil's video, I am now a vegan. Nabil, thanks for ruining my day.

A little question about NSAIDs like ibuprofen and acetaminophen:

There was a short-term study in 2002 that said NSAIDs inhibit muscle protein synthesis (over a short 24-hour period).

However, in April, 2008, a longer-term study by the same researchers showed that muscle mass and strength increase more over 3 months with NSAIDs than with a placebo (other side-effects still apply).
(couldn't find the actual paper, but this source should be good enough)

Does anybody have info on this or know of any other good studies that are pertinent?

Jacob

sounds to me like the study done with elderly individuals... it would only make sense that muscle mass would increase, because there is a lot of inflmation going on in grandma and grandpa to begin with.

are you looking for shortcuts to extreme strength and chiseled muscles?

we are very interested.what is the price per pound? do we choose the primary and secondary cuts we want? are the knuckle bones available and price per #?

Cow Co-Op,

I'll get the details and follow-up with all of you now that I know we might have enough people.

Stay tuned...

Share a Cow update:

Certified Organic, grassfed, grass finished. Packaged and delivered by one of the original CrossFit Oakland members, Scott V of Prather Ranch.

Here is the approximate breakdown for a 1/2 cow (assuming 5 people split it)

180-250 #'s of meat
40% ground beef
each person will get ~40lbs of meat:
these are approximate:
16 lbs ground
12 lbs steaks
12 lbs roasts
(flanks,tri-tip, rib-eye, siroloin, brisket, chuckroast and filets)

the advantage of doing this is that you are paying ground beef prices for all cuts, it's a huge cost savings to buy in bulk as a group AND it's a super high quality product.

cost ~$5.00/lb
Lance, you can order a la carte knuckle and marrow bones, we can work that out as we go.

all for now.

Nicole, I will join in if it's organic and grass fed. Thank you for this great idea!

> are you looking for shortcuts to extreme strength and chiseled muscles?

Nope, I just like to know what happens when I take pharmaceuticals.

I'm in. I would definitely take some knuckle and marrow bones as well. Also, I wouldn't mind getting whatever cuts they were going to grind whole (I'd prefer to grind it myself), but it wouldn't be a deal breaker if that's not possible.

I'm down for some beef. I would like to get some bones too for bone marrow.

I'm definitely in. I'd also like knuckles and marrow bones if avaialable.

I'm interested too since it's organic and I have an extra freezer. Hope it's killed as humanely as possible. Any info on that?

Thank goodness for the OGCF folks, Scott and Annie. I find so little funny about the common animal husbandry/factory farming practices in our world. Thanks for this opportunity - I wish it were available to more people at this price. Then we wouldn't have a market for sick and suffering animals and quite the same risk of getting sick from the foods we eat. But, I digress. I just wish this were taken more seriously. For a beautifully written book on the subject, read Matthew Scully's Dominion. He was George W. Bush's head speechwriter-in case that gives him any credibility insofar as not being a liberal wacko. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox and get back to work.

After watching Nabil's video i am quitting society to live in an ashram where i will feed exclusively on Braggs, sprouts and wheat grass juice.

thanks Nicole, we're in for forty pounds.

Lance,

let me know what your looking for in the way of knuckles...

:)

i'm in.

thanks nicole

We should slaughter the steer at Crossfit. It would be a good workout.

Crossfit Co-moo-nity. Count me in or as much as I can put in my standard freezer section of my fridge. Probably will hold ~1.5 cubic feet of cow.

Megan-
I don't know that I've met you, but I certainly do like your way of thinking. I can't think of a cooler way for a cow to go than a human vs. bovine death match! No modern tools or weapons allowed to keep things fair. You'll have to rely on your super explosive hips developed by cleans, and powerful legs and back brought on by big bad back squat and deadlift. We could call it High Steaks Paleo Death Match!! I'm so making T-shirts for this! Let the killin' begin!!!

After partnering with Megan in FGB I nominate her as chosen human in the death match. The cow doesn't stand a chance.

Ah, shucks. (blush)

Megan: I think this merits a "Cow Poke" WOD. Perhaps I'll devise one this weekend. It will most likely include whacking.

Nicole: Saw that you put my name on the board for the Cow Co-Op. Can I get some marrow bones outta this and a pricing for it?

Sierra: Ditto on the note on afforadable and organic food.

I'm in for the cow.
