Athlete Profile: Tom Campitelli
In light of the recent discussion on our blog regarding strength programming we thought it would be a fine time to highlight long-time CFO athlete, Tom Campitelli.
About a year ago, Tom was weighing in at 172 lbs, he was continuing to see progress in the WODs, but had stalled on strength. After attending Mark Rippetoe's Barbell Certification, Tom embarked on a year long strength program in which he focused primarily on strength gains. Here are the results:
Squat 205 (March 2008) 282.5 (March 2009)
Press 85 (March 2008) 124 (March 2009)
Bench 145 (March 2008) 205 (March 2009)
Deadlift 245 (March 2008) 355 (March 2009)
Power Clean 145 (March 2008) 203 (March 2009)
Where did all of this get him? Naturally, his metcon has been impacted, however, Tom is now able to do more CrossFit WODs as prescribed! Tom's approach is in perfect alignment with his goals which are to to get stronger and increase body weight. Over time, Tom will most likely come back to the WODs on a more regular basis to test his strength gains.
If CrossFit is your sport there will be natural ebbs and flows to the approach you take to address your weaknesses and achieve your goals. The moral of the story is that doing all CrossFit WODs as prescribed is an endpoint and there are many paths to that end.
Talk to us if you're interested in incorporating strength training into your current training schedule.
Post your experimentations with CF and strength to comments.

Great job Tom! When do we get to see the video?
Great job! What's your body weight now?
well done Tom!
he was 172... but what is he now, Tom?
the # better be somewhere over 200, because you know what I think about gaining weight.
Tom, how much heavy metal is in your diet? I'm willing to bet that helped out.
Amazing gains, and sick dedication to stick with your goals Tom.
my favorite tom quote, "bench press is not a team competition!"
All hail whole milk!!
an increase of 226.5 lbs in crossfit total in one year!
all hail vanilla ice cream.
nice work tom.
Tom is a giving and generous man - the more of him the better! Great work and keep it up...
Nice job, Tom!
It's about time we gave him some props!
milk is for babies
Steven you are just a bitter fat guy! Can I still borrow those small gloves this weekend & a jacket?
We love you, Tom!
I do have a hard time believing that you may someday come back to the WODs, but I'm glad to know that there's still a chance that you will work out with us mere mortals again at some point!
> he was 172... but what is he now, Tom?
I weigh 205 now.
> an increase of 226.5 lbs in crossfit total in one year!
I actually don't know what my CFT is, so I doubt the increase would actually be 226. I haven't done any one-rep maxes in a long time. The weights above are for work sets. Thanks for all the support, peeps.
Yay Tom! Tom is a huge inspiration. His results are great testament to what consistency and focus can achieve. Also lots of food. I spent the day with Tom recently and I mean, really, lots of food.
I'm actually kind of hoping Alex doesn't follow Tom (his CFO idol, BTW) into Starting Strength because I will not be able to afford to feed him.
Does anyone have any data on Tom's PSR as a percentage of strength gains?
Tom, I admire your focus and attention to detail. Thanks for sharing your knowledge at the gym.
TomContrarian: my favorite poster! Great work and dedication!
Great idea to put the spotlight on Tom C! Tom, you are a paragon of consistency and dedication and your results speak for themselves. Those are some huge gains!
I am in week 2 of the CFSB program and so far I've gained 30 pounds of muscle and my squat has gone from 135 to 415 while my Fran time has gone from approximately 7:16 to 1:56.94.
Just kidding about the gains, but I am hoping to get stronger and more fit at the same time with the strength bias program. We'll see how it goes... right now I'm just trying to get back to my old PR's after a few months of very sporadic workouts. I like the CFSB program so far, it seems to be a good way to focus on strength while maintaining or even improving everything else simultaneously.
Tom, your gains are quite impressive! You contribute so much to CFO and to the cow industry. Keep it up!
And just where was your 205lb self last night when I needed a partner stretch??
Tom, very inspirational.
I love the garin almost as much as I love you.Keep up the good work and please remember there is no heavy metal in the 6 am class.
-- garin, what the hell is that? I meant GAINS.
Awwww, the Melissa-Tom partner stretch. I know, how predictably mushy of me.
yeah, Tom!
Damn. I got excited. I thought garin was a new drug, I mean "supplement" that could get me as beastly as Tom C and Lance.
Sick gains Tom!
Nicole-
Are the thermals available in black? If so I'll take one. If not, I'll probably take one anyway. Cute picture of your son modeling the t-shirt. Can we now have a picture of Franklin modeling the thermal..... while riding a 1 mile wheelie across the bay bridge on his Ducatti.... wearing nothing but the thermal and some motorcycle boots.
Thank you.
Tom should be on the CFO payroll the guy knows his stuff and knows how to share it,
It's been a pleasure to see you reap the benefits of strength training over the last year. Kudos brother. Next step is finding you a chinese oly lifting bride.
I heart Tom
Great stuff, Tom. I didn't know you had stopped WODs completely. Let's talk about strength again soon.
Tom nice work I hope you have purchased new gears for you bike, you will need smaller ones at the back to keep up with all the new power you will be putting down.
Sounds like it is about time for us to do Helen again, what do you say?
> Sounds like it is about time for us to do Helen again, what do you say?
Absolutely. Name the time.
