CFO Throwdown Begins in Two Days!

CFO Throwdown Begins in Two Days!

Just a reminder…our CF-games-inspired CFO Throwdown is beginning this Saturday, March 1. It will run through Monday, March 31.

Here are the rules:

We’ll be keeping track of the workout results from the national site for each workout posted throughout the month (rest day workouts are not taken into account).

For each workout, we’ll be giving 3 points for first place, 2 points for second place, and 1 point for third place (top 3 for male and top 3 for female). To avoid cherry-picking, we’ll be docking a person 5 points if they miss a workout.

Everyone who enters will put in $20 at the beginning of the month. The top male finisher and the top female finisher will split the purse.

In addition, we’ll be throwing a dinner for everyone in the beginning of April to reward everyone for their hard work during the month.

Now’s your chance to sign up if you haven’t already done so.

Don’t miss out on all the fun; post to comments whether you’ll be participating or not.

Just a comment that -5 points for missing a workout is a little rough. For those that have to miss because of work or some other BS it might make it impossible to be in the running. I think that there should be a deduct…but 5 seems a little steep. Just a thought??? What about making it up on a rest day?

With that said, I am skipping tomorrow…But count me in for the THE THROWDOWN!!!!

  2. steven February 29, 2008 at 5:00 am

isnt the shame from not showing up already enough? Just look at it as less competition for the day.

  3. candace February 29, 2008 at 5:08 am

Does that mean we have to post our scores on the national site each day? I think I am probably missing something here.

Also, i too think a docking of 5 points for missing is excessive. Perhaps some small penalty or just ensuring that all missed workouts are made up on rest days seems appropriate to me. But working your ass off and winning a work out doesn’t seem synonymous with staying late at work and not being able to work in absolute value.

    Peace, love and dips.

  4. Brad Greenlee February 29, 2008 at 6:25 am

Yeah, -5 is pretty rough. Especially for us old people who keep getting injured.

Also, is it winner take all? There should be prizes for at least the top 3. Otherwise there’s no hope whatsoever for most of us…unless we go all Tonya Harding on daniel, steven, et al. :)

  5. Jonathan February 29, 2008 at 6:45 am

$20, eh? that could add up. good luck to you 3 on, 1 off-ers. As for me, I’ll be continuing my Crossfit-tiny-little-apartment-with-way-too-much-stuff-in it workouts with saturdays at CFO. Today was a good one. I recommend it.

    5 Rounds
    7 push press – 95# sandbag
    15 kettlebell swings – 28kg kettlebell
225′ farmers walk (up and down driveway) with 95# sandbag (bear hugging the sandbag).

  6. steven February 29, 2008 at 6:46 am

oh i suggested that the top girl and guy at the end of the month go head to head for a winner take all.

    scaled workout of course.

  7. Jonathan February 29, 2008 at 6:50 am

holy s**t steven. that’s faster than both dudes on the national site video (OPT and Freddie!). Good work.

  8. casey February 29, 2008 at 7:04 am

i’m down to participate, and yeah is there a way to at least try to make up workouts if something comes up?

do you only get points if you do the workouts as rx’d?

    steven: 5 minutes?! whoa.

tami did it twice today! that’s 140 ring dips. some of mine were probably a little shallow esp at the end.

  9. Tamara February 29, 2008 at 8:00 am

Obviously we will all need some clarification on the rules. It sounds like we will have to use the rest days according to the national site. I also think that we should be able to use the rest days for make ups, considering people actually have legit reasons for missing the workouts. Workouts should definitely be as rx’d or something equally as challenging.

  10. Tamara February 29, 2008 at 8:07 am

Casey…way to beat me by four minutes twice in one day :)

Steven is absolutely out of control!!!

  11. Patrick February 29, 2008 at 8:25 am

whoever wins better be picking up the bar tab…

  12. savage jr. February 29, 2008 at 8:45 am

if thats the case, we better up the buy in to like $100. Nothing drives more grueling competition than a higher reward. 😉

  13. Mike Minium February 29, 2008 at 2:08 pm

The 5-point penalty is designed to curtail behavior that might lead to gaming the system.

If a 5k run comes up and there’s nothing at stake, and you’re sitting in the lead already, what incentive would you have to run around the lake for 20 minutes. Why not just rest up for the next workout?

This month is designed to push our bodies to the limit, and force adaptations in areas far outside of our comfort zone, especially in terms of the ten general physical skills. There will be a workout that comes up that you won’t want to do; trust me. And that workout is the one you need to be doing more than any other.

And yes, there will be a 24-hour grace period to make up workouts if you miss them for a legitimate reason.

  14. Mike Minium February 29, 2008 at 2:11 pm

And other than that, quit whining and posturing! Life, and competition, is filled with all kinds of unpleasant penalties for poor choices.

Let the throwdown be decided on the gym floor.

  15. Candace February 29, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Listen to your people mini! There is no need to be a heavy-handed dictator.

I think you are conceeding a bit though – a 24 hour grace period to make up workouts seems fair. I guess if you miss one and the rest day isn’t the following day you will just have to do 2 in one day!?!

  16. Brad Gilliatt February 29, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Alright, here’s the opening line, direct from Vegas:

    Daniel: odds on favorite: 2:3
    Steven: even money – 1:1
    Brandon: 5:2
    Lau: 3:1
    Patrick: 7:2
    Tom C: 4:1
    Loren: 5:1
    Tom A: 5:1
    Chad: 7:1
    Chris: 8:1
    Jonathan: off the board
    Lance: Field Bet 12:1
    Charles: Field Bet 12:1
    Wyatt: Field Bet 12:1
    Brad Greenlee: Field Bet 12:1
    Connor: Field Bet 12:1
    Brian: Field Bet 12:1
    Brad Gilliatt: 500:1

    Casey: favorite (barely): 1:1
    Audra: 3:2
    Connie: 4:1
    Tamara: 5:1
    Candace: 5:1
    Beth: Off the board
    Sierra: Field Bet 7:1
    Mary Jo: Field Bet 7:1
    Molly: Field Bet 7:1
    Sherrill: Field Bet 7:1
    Laura: Field Bet 7:1

    Mini: Off the board
    Nicole: Off the board

That’s what the handicappers are saying. They clearly are not paying attention to Daniel’s early whining about time commitments. Could it be possible Daniel knows more than he’s saying about his work schedule? We’ll see. The biggest unknowns, will Casey and Candace be able to run?

Need to know more about Jonathan and Beth.

Who is Vegas missing? I’m certain someone is left out!!!

Best bets – Connie to win and the men’s field bet to show.

(yes, I have this much time on my hands)

  17. TomC February 29, 2008 at 5:58 pm

I think I should be after Loren on those odds. He trounces me on almost every workout, especially when it involves anything upper body. I am weak and slow.

I also think the chances that I will be able to go 3 on 1 off for a month are astronomically low. I will wind up in negative point territory very quickly. Hell, I think I’ve only had the best performance of the day once since July and that was because no one showed up that day. I think my odds are more like 175:1.

On the plus side, I saw Fu-Manchu on Wednesday. Despite the awful line up of opening bands, the Fu took care of business in a big way. Long live the Fu. Clutch and The Heavenly States are rolling into town in the next few weeks, too.

  18. Maximus @ CF East Bay February 29, 2008 at 6:09 pm

I put up a workout for tomorrow on CrossFit East Bay that I think most of you will want to do.

  19. daniel February 29, 2008 at 6:15 pm

I think my stock is overpriced…You should not leave out Steven since he can come up with some crazy performances. Brandon is probably going to have a lot of missed days, but he has a chance to put together a good run.
I think the women will surprise you…it is going to come down to consistancy.

As a side note…I’ll quit my job if it comes down to it!

  20. steven February 29, 2008 at 6:24 pm

what about for us people who have spring breaks…

oh and that was a serious question, I just remembered haha.

  21. Patrick February 29, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Consistency and the fact that I might be pulling a tonya harding on your a$$. Better watch yourself on that long walk from your car to CFO Nancy…

  22. casey February 29, 2008 at 6:57 pm

thanks brad, and i can run again, but audra’s been outpacing me on metcon and beth kills the running workouts. and candace and tami are definitely stronger.

and i’m going to be gone march 22 – 26th, going to the desert to rock climb, so that’s -25 right thurrr..

obviously i got some ninja shit going on so i’m not worried about patrick and his knives.
my lack of depth perception and inability to parallel park in small spaces notwithstanding.

  23. Tamara February 29, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Bet on whoever you want, I plan on winning everything anyway…Can’t help it, I’m just that good!

  24. steven February 29, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Thats the right attitude Tamara… lets take it home.

  25. casey February 29, 2008 at 8:01 pm

    f yeah tami it’s on

  26. Audra February 29, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Casey and Steven – way to kill that workout!

March Throwdown….I must say, the competition is definitely on! Sans Patrick’s Tonya Harding special, I think the throwdown is up for grabs among all involved. All I’ve got to say is no whining, no excuses – just a lot of sweat and booty kicking performances…let the games begin!!

  27. Audra February 29, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Tamara- Here you go again, stirrin’ s**t up – and I’m loving every bit of it. It’s on damn it!!! It’s gonna take more than your all black fits to get you through this one!! :)

  28. Tamara February 29, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Audra can take the 5 & 10k’s and shove them up her tight ass Lulu Lemon’s…There aren’t any one leg events so Casey won’t be a threat…Candace’s best workout is being Daniels cheerleader…Connie should stick to what she does best, standing around looking cute… Beth who????

  29. Brad Gilliatt February 29, 2008 at 8:19 pm

    oh just killing me….

Tamara – I’m dying here…. laughing my butt off!!!

Truth be told, someone very very high up in the CFO hierarchy said I had you too low. Errr, I mean Vegas.

  30. Tamara February 29, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Game recognize game Steven, need we say more.

Brad.. Don’t sleep on my skillz, get those odds right!

  31. sierra February 29, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Tamara, you are brutal! Gotta love it… this month is gonna be fun, even for a low-scorin’ gal like myself!

  32. Tamara February 29, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Sorry Casey I forgot you leg is better but your ass is also much bigger. You will definitely get 30 muscle- ups…in three hours!!

  33. Brad Gilliatt February 29, 2008 at 9:01 pm

    Tamara –

Your money odds will improve when I see you run an 800m under 5 minutes.

  34. Audra February 29, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Sierra – don’t sell yourself short! You can run circles around Tamara (aka “Weezy”)- and do it with a 50lb vest!!!

  35. casey February 29, 2008 at 9:19 pm

tami: don’t be hatin.. i’m going to make it even bigger then just so i can out squat you, watch for it!

plus, didn’t patrick say winner was picking up the bar tab? you might lift more weight than i do but i can definitely drink you under the table and ring up a fat bill while doing it. i’d say, in that situation, that makes me a winner.

  36. steven February 29, 2008 at 9:28 pm

watch tomorrow be 30 muscle ups for time…

  37. SAVAGE February 29, 2008 at 9:32 pm

You got muscle ups? I’m guessing not since you can’t do them in a power lifters stance.

  38. jp February 29, 2008 at 9:36 pm

I have one word for you:

    Dark Horse.

  39. savage jr. February 29, 2008 at 9:44 pm

you know what… if i have to rip my shoulder socket out just to beat you

    then let it be done.

  40. Tamara February 29, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Listen up McHotpants..I don’t even drink and I’ll take that bet. You & Audge suffer from the same problem… Tight close = lack of oxygen and the inability to make reasonable challenges!

  41. Audra February 29, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Tamara – If your spelling is any predictor of your performance this next month, you may as well quit now!!!

  42. Brad Gilliatt February 29, 2008 at 10:34 pm

    Mike – re: scoring

At first I didn’t agree with Daniel and Candace, but now looking at the scoring format, I no likey.

    Two things –

    1. (-5) penalty wipes out almost 2 wins. That’s too much.

    2. Similar to boxing’s “10pt must” scoring system, there should be a way for each Throwdown participant to earn a point for each WOD completed as RX’d. This way, the field and the mid-level participants (Tamara) will have a shot. (and me, an extreme long shot)

    Maybe go:

    1st – 6pts
    2nd – 4pts
    3rd – 3pts
    All rx’d finishers 1pt.

Miss a WOD: (-3) (And, don’t let them make up workouts on rest days. That doesn’t seem fair to others, and leaves too much wiggle room in the system.)

Maybe 1pt for showing up will get more participants?

    Ok, rock on.

  43. Alec February 29, 2008 at 11:23 pm

    Best CFO comments thread ever.

  44. Candace February 29, 2008 at 11:27 pm

I am glad you are coming around. I actually tried to figure out how to forcast what the results would be using data from the winner’s of previous WODs but I couldn’t find comprehensive information. I would try to prove, statistically, that such a high penalty for missing a workout may distort the results from who is genuinely the best performer to who has the most flexible schedule. Secondly, I would test whether it’s likely that the “winners” are more successful because they are “cherry-picking” and I am fairly certain that you would find that to be an unqualified judgement. I’m going to let it go though – clearly I am not the boss.

You must be on something that is influencing your judgement. On Saturday (March 1) I will be nearly two months removed from my surgery. By the end of the month, I will be 3 months removed… ie. have acquired 50% more proficiency from my ACL repair deficit. The long and short of it is – I’m coming to get your ass. Don’t get comfortable with your name on the board. It’s merely a placeholder:)

  45. Alec February 29, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Since I’m still working up to Rx’ed workouts and the CFO Throwdown is thus hopelessly out of reach, instead I’ll do the CFO ShowUp–I will show up for every workout in the month of March. (Though I’ll probably have to shift some workouts to rest days.)

  46. Mike Minium February 29, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Thank you for your comment, Alec.

Someone gets the point of this month-long affair.

  47. SAVAGE February 29, 2008 at 11:52 pm

ok…so Candace wants to make it mind numbingly complex, Brad wants it be fair, Mike just wants everybody to show up and hug…

  48. Brad Gilliatt February 29, 2008 at 11:53 pm

Mike – hold on a second. You’re the one putting the $$$ in play, what do you expect?

I’ll tell you what. I know you’re “off the board”, but I’m going to assume you’ll do each WOD for the month. I’ll place the over/under of your 1st place performances at 5. I’ll put $20 on the under.

  49. Trouble March 1, 2008 at 12:38 am

Mike – what if we just feel “too run down” to do the WOD?

  50. Lau March 1, 2008 at 12:52 am

    First off: Best posts EVER.

Second: I agree with Brad’s point system.

Third: If you don’t have the testicular/ovular fortitude to post with your real name your not crossfit.

    Game on.

  51. Tamara March 1, 2008 at 1:05 am

Oh Candace that was real cute! When you can convince yourself of that bull then give me a call. Your knee might get better but you will always be the same Candace I consistently put a beat down on. I give you much credit for your muscle-ups, hand stand push-ups and even the L exercises. However, I will always be stronger, faster and more athletic. You might get one or two in there but I will always come out on top, you would literally have to cheat to beat me in the long run :) Please don’t hurt yourself trying!

    I like your idea Brad

  52. Michael A. March 1, 2008 at 1:07 am

Hey Dictator Mini, how about extra points for showing up even though I’m old, fat and out of shape?
Personally, I think you’re being too soft. I say -1000 points for not showing up, no make-ups and mandatory 10k rows on “rest” days. Make it all about showing up and I’ll ante up $20 myself. :-)

    Michael A.

P.S. Better have all participants sign binding arbitration agreements.

  53. Robyn March 1, 2008 at 1:09 am

    1. Ok, good point, here is my replacement post: Mike, seriously – “too run down”.. There goes my hero…

    2. I think I am in love w Tamara… she so mean…

    3. That good old California state education system is really showing itself on these posts..

    4. Ovular??

  54. steven March 1, 2008 at 1:14 am

  55. steven March 1, 2008 at 1:18 am

our very own march madness… place your bets

after march we can have an affiliate battle with whomever around here for the month of april.

  56. Brad Gilliatt March 1, 2008 at 1:25 am

    Yo Michael A –

you are no longer out of shape

    nor fat.

But you are an old fart.

  57. Alec March 1, 2008 at 1:30 am

Just to clarify, even though I’m doing the ShowUp instead of the ThrowDown, out of solidarity I’ll still contribute $20. Though I might as well save some time and just hand it directly to Casey.

I must admit I like some variation of Brad’s suggestion, so that I could actually participate and not end up with a zero, or (sigh) a negative number:

    1st place: 5 points
    2nd place: 4 points
    3rd place: 3 points
    Finish as Rx’ed: 2 points
    Show up: 1 point
    No-show: -5 points

    “Ovular fortitude”–awesome.

  58. Jonathan March 1, 2008 at 1:44 am

ovular fortitude should be a band name.

if you get docked 5 points for missing a wod, I assume most people will be in the negative, since you only get 3 if you win. i like Alec’s 5, 4, 3 point system instead. that way a miss negates a win evenly.

  59. Jonathan March 1, 2008 at 1:48 am

Tom – Fu Manchu rocks. I saw Clutch a few years ago back in Pgh, PA. Neil Fallon’s an amazing front man. Haven’t seen them since they added the B3 player.

  60. Nicole Okumu March 1, 2008 at 1:57 am

Wow, by far the most provocative post in the history of CFO. I agree with Brad’s most recent analysis (might need to reconsider the rules Mini cuz the people have spoken) and am thankful to Alec for the Throwdown’s little brother Showup!

Tamara you hands down win the s***-Talkers Award! If this brokeback wasn’t down and out I might engage you in a smack-talking duel! Even then, easy on the people!

  61. steven March 1, 2008 at 2:05 am

if you cant take the heat…

  62. edgar March 1, 2008 at 2:37 am

someone could write their dissertation off these posts… extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation, relationship between age/gender and shit-talking, effects of competition on human psyche…

    Winning CFO throwdown = x$’s…
Going home knowing you worked your ass off = priceless…

psst, how about a masters(>35 yrs old)/newbie (cf’ing < 6mos) throwdown on the dl. $100 buy-in ($20 is for kids)= 2pts for winner, 2pts for RX, 2pts for showing up, -1pt for missed wod (no make-ups). winner takes all...

  63. edgar March 1, 2008 at 2:40 am

psst… how about a masters (>35 yrs old)/newbie (cf’ing<6mos) showdown... $100 buy-in ($20 is for kids) - 2 pts for winner, 2pts for rx, 2 pts for showing up, -1 pt for missed wod (no make-up). winners take all...

  64. Brad Greenlee March 1, 2008 at 3:27 am

Master’s division! Yeah! Then I’ll actually have a shot!

  65. Nabil March 1, 2008 at 4:45 am

What qualifies as a “legitimate” excuse for missing a workout? I just renewed my membership on and I’m planning on spending some quality time in front of the computer.

  66. daniel March 1, 2008 at 5:48 am is a legitamate excuse…no questions asked!

    The talk stops tomorrow!

  67. Brad Gilliatt March 1, 2008 at 6:46 pm

I like having the last word.
