CFO Throwdown Begins in Two Days!

Just a reminder…our CF-games-inspired CFO Throwdown is beginning this Saturday, March 1. It will run through Monday, March 31.

Here are the rules:

We’ll be keeping track of the workout results from the national site for each workout posted throughout the month (rest day workouts are not taken into account).

For each workout, we’ll be giving 3 points for first place, 2 points for second place, and 1 point for third place (top 3 for male and top 3 for female). To avoid cherry-picking, we’ll be docking a person 5 points if they miss a workout.

Everyone who enters will put in $20 at the beginning of the month. The top male finisher and the top female finisher will split the purse.

In addition, we’ll be throwing a dinner for everyone in the beginning of April to reward everyone for their hard work during the month.

    Just a comment that -5 points for missing a workout is a little rough. For those that have to miss because of work or some other BS it might make it impossible to be in the running. I think that there should be a deduct…but 5 seems a little steep. Just a thought??? What about making it up on a rest day?

    With that said, I am skipping tomorrow…But count me in for the THE THROWDOWN!!!!

    Does that mean we have to post our scores on the national site each day? I think I am probably missing something here.

    Also, i too think a docking of 5 points for missing is excessive. Perhaps some small penalty or just ensuring that all missed workouts are made up on rest days seems appropriate to me. But working your ass off and winning a work out doesn’t seem synonymous with staying late at work and not being able to work in absolute value.

    Yeah, -5 is pretty rough. Especially for us old people who keep getting injured.

    Also, is it winner take all? There should be prizes for at least the top 3. Otherwise there’s no hope whatsoever for most of us…unless we go all Tonya Harding on daniel, steven, et al. :)

    $20, eh? that could add up. good luck to you 3 on, 1 off-ers. As for me, I’ll be continuing my Crossfit-tiny-little-apartment-with-way-too-much-stuff-in it workouts with saturdays at CFO. Today was a good one. I recommend it.

    i’m down to participate, and yeah is there a way to at least try to make up workouts if something comes up?

    do you only get points if you do the workouts as rx’d?

    steven: 5 minutes?! whoa.

    tami did it twice today! that’s 140 ring dips. some of mine were probably a little shallow esp at the end.

    Obviously we will all need some clarification on the rules. It sounds like we will have to use the rest days according to the national site. I also think that we should be able to use the rest days for make ups, considering people actually have legit reasons for missing the workouts. Workouts should definitely be as rx’d or something equally as challenging.

    The 5-point penalty is designed to curtail behavior that might lead to gaming the system.

    If a 5k run comes up and there’s nothing at stake, and you’re sitting in the lead already, what incentive would you have to run around the lake for 20 minutes. Why not just rest up for the next workout?

    This month is designed to push our bodies to the limit, and force adaptations in areas far outside of our comfort zone, especially in terms of the ten general physical skills. There will be a workout that comes up that you won’t want to do; trust me. And that workout is the one you need to be doing more than any other.

    And yes, there will be a 24-hour grace period to make up workouts if you miss them for a legitimate reason.

    I think you are conceeding a bit though – a 24 hour grace period to make up workouts seems fair. I guess if you miss one and the rest day isn’t the following day you will just have to do 2 in one day!?!

    I think I should be after Loren on those odds. He trounces me on almost every workout, especially when it involves anything upper body. I am weak and slow.

    I also think the chances that I will be able to go 3 on 1 off for a month are astronomically low. I will wind up in negative point territory very quickly. Hell, I think I’ve only had the best performance of the day once since July and that was because no one showed up that day. I think my odds are more like 175:1.

    On the plus side, I saw Fu-Manchu on Wednesday. Despite the awful line up of opening bands, the Fu took care of business in a big way. Long live the Fu. Clutch and The Heavenly States are rolling into town in the next few weeks, too.

    Brad,
    I think my stock is overpriced…You should not leave out Steven since he can come up with some crazy performances. Brandon is probably going to have a lot of missed days, but he has a chance to put together a good run.
    I think the women will surprise you…it is going to come down to consistancy.

    As a side note…I’ll quit my job if it comes down to it!

    thanks brad, and i can run again, but audra’s been outpacing me on metcon and beth kills the running workouts. and candace and tami are definitely stronger.

    and i’m going to be gone march 22 – 26th, going to the desert to rock climb, so that’s -25 right thurrr..

    obviously i got some ninja shit going on so i’m not worried about patrick and his knives.
    my lack of depth perception and inability to parallel park in small spaces notwithstanding.

    March Throwdown….I must say, the competition is definitely on! Sans Patrick’s Tonya Harding special, I think the throwdown is up for grabs among all involved. All I’ve got to say is no whining, no excuses – just a lot of sweat and booty kicking performances…let the games begin!!

    Mike – re: scoring

    At first I didn’t agree with Daniel and Candace, but now looking at the scoring format, I no likey.

    Two things –

    1. (-5) penalty wipes out almost 2 wins. That’s too much.

    2. Similar to boxing’s “10pt must” scoring system, there should be a way for each Throwdown participant to earn a point for each WOD completed as RX’d. This way, the field and the mid-level participants (Tamara) will have a shot. (and me, an extreme long shot)

    Maybe go:

    1st – 6pts
    2nd – 4pts
    3rd – 3pts
    All rx’d finishers 1pt.

    Miss a WOD: (-3) (And, don’t let them make up workouts on rest days. That doesn’t seem fair to others, and leaves too much wiggle room in the system.)

    Maybe 1pt for showing up will get more participants?

    Ok, rock on.

    I am glad you are coming around. I actually tried to figure out how to forcast what the results would be using data from the winner’s of previous WODs but I couldn’t find comprehensive information. I would try to prove, statistically, that such a high penalty for missing a workout may distort the results from who is genuinely the best performer to who has the most flexible schedule. Secondly, I would test whether it’s likely that the “winners” are more successful because they are “cherry-picking” and I am fairly certain that you would find that to be an unqualified judgement. I’m going to let it go though – clearly I am not the boss.

    You must be on something that is influencing your judgement. On Saturday (March 1) I will be nearly two months removed from my surgery. By the end of the month, I will be 3 months removed… ie. have acquired 50% more proficiency from my ACL repair deficit. The long and short of it is – I’m coming to get your ass. Don’t get comfortable with your name on the board. It’s merely a placeholder:)

    Since I’m still working up to Rx’ed workouts and the CFO Throwdown is thus hopelessly out of reach, instead I’ll do the CFO ShowUp–I will show up for every workout in the month of March. (Though I’ll probably have to shift some workouts to rest days.)

    Oh Candace that was real cute! When you can convince yourself of that bull then give me a call. Your knee might get better but you will always be the same Candace I consistently put a beat down on. I give you much credit for your muscle-ups, hand stand push-ups and even the L exercises. However, I will always be stronger, faster and more athletic. You might get one or two in there but I will always come out on top, you would literally have to cheat to beat me in the long run :) Please don’t hurt yourself trying!

    Hey Dictator Mini, how about extra points for showing up even though I’m old, fat and out of shape?
    Personally, I think you’re being too soft. I say -1000 points for not showing up, no make-ups and mandatory 10k rows on “rest” days. Make it all about showing up and I’ll ante up $20 myself. :-)

    Just to clarify, even though I’m doing the ShowUp instead of the ThrowDown, out of solidarity I’ll still contribute $20. Though I might as well save some time and just hand it directly to Casey.

    I must admit I like some variation of Brad’s suggestion, so that I could actually participate and not end up with a zero, or (sigh) a negative number:

    1st place: 5 points
    2nd place: 4 points
    3rd place: 3 points
    Finish as Rx’ed: 2 points
    Show up: 1 point
    No-show: -5 points

    if you get docked 5 points for missing a wod, I assume most people will be in the negative, since you only get 3 if you win. i like Alec’s 5, 4, 3 point system instead. that way a miss negates a win evenly.
