Steve’s 2nd Place Performance in the Deadlift/Box Jump Couplet
Days like yesterday make days like today all the more satisfying. The same perseverance and grit Steve showed yesterday, as he clawed his way through workouts that weren’t in his wheelhouse, he showed today as his back was against the wall and he knew he had to deliver. It was also the culmination of all the work he’s put in since going through shoulder surgery a year-and-a-half ago. I couldn’t be prouder of him and am really looking forward to his final day of competition–he earned it!
If you didn’t already catch it on our FB page, Steve started the day in 17th place. The first workout, Pullgatory, was a brutal chipper combining arm-over-arm sled pulls with shoulder-to-overheads, burpees, and sumo-deadlift high-pulls. Steve really stepped up, finishing in 9th place and giving himself a chance (albeit a seemingly small one). After his 9th place finish, he remained in 17th place overall, but he narrowed the gap considerably between himself and the 12th-place competitor.
Steve knew he had to absolutely crush the final workout: 21-15-9 reps of 225# deadlifts and 24″ box jumps. Our mantra going into the workout was, “leave nothing out there.” He had to keep moving and push through the pain to give himself a chance to move on to Day 3 (only the top 12 competitors moved on to the final day). And as you can see in the video above, he did. He executed the plan perfectly and took 2nd place in the workout! That performance skyrocketed him from 17th place to 9th place, and secured his spot for the final day! It was such a clutch performance!
Tomorrow starts off with a 1RM clean-and-jerk and concludes with another chipper involving double-unders, sprints, rope climbs, etc.

Let’s give Steve that one last push he needs to go out and bring his best on Day 3. Light up the blog comments and FB with words of encouragement! One more day!
